COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, many gathered at the Dane County Humane Society for a bird crafting event that raised awareness of how window collisions endanger birds. The event, led by local artist Karen Moore, celebrated World Migratory Bird Day and provided $5 per completed sculpture to the Wildlife Center.  WKOW
  • The Joinery in Middleton hosted Joinery Fest to celebrate its two-year anniversary by inviting community members to explore woodworking techniques and enjoy food while learning new skills—owner Steven Ricks said beginners can try their hand at making their own projects at this event.  WMTV
  • Ralph Andreano, a longtime UW-Madison professor who worked with the World Health Organization and shaped health economics in the state, died in early September at age 97. His family will hold a service and life celebration on Friday, Oct. 17 at Cress Funeral and Cremation Services — followed by a reception at Nakoma Golf Club.  Isthmus
  • Today, the 'Journey to Justice' bus tour stopped in Madison to call for an end to solitary confinement by featuring a replica cell with soundscapes and survivor testimony — a national campaign organized by formerly incarcerated advocates that is urging lawmakers to reconsider costly isolation practices — before the bus departs for Detroit. The mobile exhibit, part of an eight-week tour through 17 cities, aims to highlight both the human and financial impacts of solitary confinement.  WMTV
  • Families gathered yesterday at Wingra Park for Luke’s Learn to Fish Clinic—a free event honoring Luke Diebel where kids learned to fish and enjoy nature. The event was hosted by Madison Parks, the Madison Parks Foundation, Wingra Boats’ Camp Wingra, and Girl Scout Troop #8414, with donations supporting a memorial fund for future fishing camp scholarships.  WKOW
  • Channel3000 has compiled Halloween trick-or-treat hours for many towns in the News 3 Now viewing area, with times varying from Oct. 15 to Oct. 31 (for example, Barneveld will host trick-or-treating on Oct. 31 from 5-7 p.m.). In Madison, residents are advised to walk around from 4-8 p.m. on Halloween, and Downtown Madison hosts a Family Halloween on Oct. 29 from 3-6 p.m.  WISC-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash on US 12 occurred at the Mineral Point Road ramp at 4:42 a.m. on Oct 12 and blocked all lanes for over two hours—drivers are advised to seek alternate routes.  WKOW

CRIME NEWS

  • During the Milwaukee Brewers game, UW-Madison Police ejected 28 fans after a 37-0 loss to Iowa, issuing 18 citations, making 16 arrests, and handling 15 first aid calls and eight paramedic calls — including the ejection of 18 UW students.  WISC-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pedestrians will have to use a temporary path along Broom Street and North Shore Drive—set up for railway renovations—while John Nolen Drive is rebuilt next year.  Wisconsin State Journal
  • Today, city officials broke ground on the $42 million project at John Nolen Drive, which will replace six bridges, repave roads from Lakeside to Broom, and start lane closures as traffic shifts to one lane in each direction. The project will add a new bike and walking path and may cause delays—drivers are advised to use detours like Park Street or University Avenue until traffic adjusts.  Isthmus
