COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Before Madison Housing Week begins on Oct. 19, AARP Wisconsin said adding accessory dwelling units can give homeowners small, flexible spaces that let them keep equity as needs change—city leaders and AARP are urging new options while the week runs until Oct. 25 with an ADU design competition featuring an open house on Oct. 23 and a ribbon-cutting on Oct. 24.  WISC-TV
  • Henry Vilas Zoo will say goodbye to grizzly bears Ash and Lexi—both 14 years old—later this month as they move to another AZA-accredited institution after years of teaching visitors about hibernation; the zoo will soon welcome new polar bears to join its 26-year-old resident Berit and plans to bring a male later.  WMTV
  • Donors set a new record at UW-Madison's 13th Fill the Hill campaign as it raised about $741,600 from 4,380 gifts by Friday—bringing the total raised to roughly $4.5 million over the years.  WKOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • West Gilman Street is being refreshed with three new public art projects as part of the SafeGrowth initiative (sponsored by the Isthmus Safety Initiative) that brings city agencies together to boost safety and community pride. One project is the colorful #59 Space Blob installation by Stephen Perkins (inspired by his accordion book) now on the rear of Porta Bella.  City of Madison
  • Rick Bernstein of the Dane County Historical Society hosted an exhibit at Sequoya Library on Monday that explained how racial covenants once barred non-white people from buying homes. Thirty local attendees checked their property deeds for hidden covenants—part of the ongoing 'Unjust Deeds' presentation that began in February and is now touring additional libraries.  The Daily Cardinal
  • Bad Bunny’s new album has help from UW—Madison professor Jorell Meléndez—Badillo who wrote 17 short stories about Puerto Rico for each song. The professor said he would help again if Bad Bunny asks him as more people learn about Puerto Rico before his Super Bowl show.  WKOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UW–Madison clarified on Oct. 1 that the ethnic studies requirement will remain part of the Civics and Perspective general education category after a student council meeting and emails from faculty cleared up concerns about its removal—this update resolves the misunderstanding that had worried students and staff.  WISC-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A deer farm in Portage County tested positive for chronic wasting disease in a three-year-old buck on Friday, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection said. The farm is under quarantine as state and federal officials begin an investigation—aimed at stopping further spread.  WISC-TV
  • A UW–Madison study found that fishing has a larger effect on fish populations than warming in nearly 200 Midwest lakes; researchers noted that 92 percent of the populations are more influenced by harvest, with only cisco showing greater harm from warming. The study suggests that adjusting fishing rules could help protect fish numbers as lakes warm.  Wisconsin Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Madison invites residents to join a virtual meeting on Tuesday, October 22 at 6:00 p.m. to learn about the Perry Street Connection Study, which will examine a plan to extend Perry Street over or under the Beltline to connect neighborhoods and businesses — residents can share their feedback to guide future improvements.  City of Madison
  • The City of Madison Forestry will begin grinding tree stumps and planting new trees at 2903 Packers Ave on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m.—the work is expected to take three hours. Northbound traffic on Packers Ave will be detoured via International Lane to Darwin Drive or Dryden Drive to Scott Lane.  WISC-TV

  • Joe is a 9-month-old mixed breed from the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin in Janesville and has been named Pet of the Week by 27 News. Humane Society spokesperson Kaitlyn Flynn said he is playful and curious — warming up quickly to new people.  WKOW
