BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream announced that Belgian Daydream won its Create A Flavor contest today; the winning flavor—created by Leslie—features vanilla ice cream swirled with maple and crispy waffle pieces. It will be released in 2026 with a portion of future sales benefiting TEENworks.  WISC-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Salvatore's Tomato Pies in Sun Prairie announced a fundraiser for Officer Ryan Kimberely and K9 Freddie injured in a Sept. 27 crash when Christopher Brugger allegedly drove recklessly during a 4.5-mile chase exceeding 80 mph—each Kimberely Pie sale will donate $10 to their recovery fund.  FOX 47
  • American Family Children’s Hospital discharged Samuel (Samy) Garduno-Martinez, the last ALCS student critically injured in the Dec. 16th, 2024 shooting, as emergency services led a procession on the Beltline for his transfer to a rehabilitation center in Chicago.  WMTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Madison public schools added 162 full-day 4K seats at several district schools and partner centers to meet referendum promises and help working families—making childcare more available for young learners. The district is piloting a five-day program at Olson Elementary and set aside an extra $595,600 for staffing to support the 4K expansion.  The Capital Times
  • On Tuesday, three scientists won the Nobel Prize in physics for research on quantum tunneling that helped improve MRI machines and digital devices — one winner co-founded Qolab at UW-Madison to work on quantum computing. Their work is expected to drive further advances in science.  WISC-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Madison Alders unanimously approved proposals that ease rules on building housing — changing height transitions, lot dimensions and attached garage setbacks to open the door to new residential lots that support the goal of 15,000 homes by 2030.  WMTV
  • City of Madison officials said parts of Langdon Street and nearby roads will be closed Friday for the UW-Madison homecoming parade. Officials said closures will run from 8 a.m. to midnight on one section and from 4 to 8 p.m. on others — one driving lane will remain open near the Edgewater Hotel — and WMTV will begin live coverage at 5:40 p.m.  WMTV
  • The state school department got new money to keep its program for deafblind kids running after federal funds ended in September—families will get support, tools, and training for the next year across the state.  WISC-TV
  • The City has scheduled a series of public meetings for its Southwest and Southeast Area Plans in the coming weeks. Residents, community organizations and businesses will have a chance to review issues, comment on draft actions and learn from community feedback gathered since 2024—helping shape future plans.  City of Madison
  • Madison’s Common Council approved the hire of Police Chief John Patterson along with several housing proposals Tuesday night—Patterson will be sworn in on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at the Black Business Hub. The council also revised rules on height transitions and backyard lots and authorized a $150,000 downtown economic investment contract.  WKOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Survivors, family and loved ones participated in a 352-yard mini race at Hilldale shopping center Wednesday to honor breast cancer awareness month and raise funds for survivor retreats—Breast Cancer Recovery organized the event and urged women to schedule regular mammograms—board member Laurie Bue noted the race strengthened support for those facing cancer.  WMTV
