COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Agrace Thrift Stores' Holiday Pop-up Shop returns on Oct. 30 near East Towne Mall and will be open until Nov. 30 on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—the shop sells new and gently used items to help fund local grief support services that assist nearly 4,000 people each year.  WISC-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Blue Star Dairy, which runs farms in Arlington and Vienna, plans to add more than 60% more cows in the next five years and combine its farms into one site as the Arlington town board votes today on the expansion and needed waivers. The company needs many permits—covering water use and waste management—and some locals fear it could harm the groundwater with high nitrate levels.  Wisconsin Public Radio

  • Samuel Garduno-Martinez, known as Samy, was injured in a December 16 school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School and is fighting to recover after suffering multiple gunshot wounds and developing encephalitis—his family has launched a GoFundMe campaign with a $140,000 goal to cover his 24-hour care and upcoming specialized rehabilitation near Chicago.  FOX 47

  • At Madison Tattoo Festival at the Alliant Energy Center, tattoo artists competed in the Worst Tattoo Competition—one contestant displayed a dragon mauling a unicorn on his buttock while Emily Huffaker won for a shoddy tattoo of her late dog Yoda. A free tattoo removal package from Removery was offered as the prize.  Isthmus
  • Madison’s Willow Drive Mounds and Habitation Complex was named to the National Register of Historic Places Tuesday — a historic site with burial mounds and a habitation area visited from 5000 B.C. to 1000 A.D. that offers insights into Native American art, religion and ritual practices.  WMTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Josh Kaul announced Tuesday that he will not run for governor but will instead seek a third term, following Gov. Tony Evers’ decision not to run for reelection. His decision leaves an open governor’s race while Kaul remains a key figure in state law enforcement.  WISC-TV
  • The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources gave Madison a $1.3 million interest-free loan from its Ready for Reuse program to clear contamination near the former Oscar Mayer facility on the north side. The city will use the funds on properties at 1846 Commercial Avenue and 905 and 1003 Huxley Street—steps that lead toward the Huxley Yards project for affordable housing, commercial space and a park.  WISC-TV
  • Madison unveiled its 2026 Executive Operating Budget proposal—featuring the lowest tax rate increase in 40 years, $1.7 million for homeless services, staffing for the new library center, and funding for a tenth ambulance company to address growing emergency needs. Public input will be accepted over the next month as the Finance Committee and Common Council work on key amendments.  City of Madison
  • The City of Madison will hold the swearing-in ceremony for new Police Chief John Patterson at 4:00 p.m. on October 22 at the Black Business Hub on S. Park Street—Patterson is a 27-year MPD veteran who has served in every district and will work to build community trust.  City of Madison
  • Madison city officials proposed a rule to limit sales of hemp-derived THC products to customers 21 and older during Tuesday’s meeting — a measure aimed at reducing emergency room visits among children due to rising incidents. The proposal will be reviewed by two committees before returning to the Common Council on Nov. 25.  FOX 47
  • Dane County is launching a pilot program that will offer $300,000 to communities and non-profits to buy agricultural conservation easements—tools that restrict future development while ensuring the land meets nutrient management and erosion control standards.
