COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dane County Humane Society is waiving fees for Lonely Hearts Club members this October so over 200 shelter animals, including dogs and cats from crowded shelters, can find new homes—additional fee-reduced events will also be offered.  WMTV
  • Residents in Madison met the city's mounted police horses at an apple orchard fundraiser at Alpine Ridge Orchard in Brooklyn. The Friends of Madison Mounted Horse Patrol hosted the event to fund extended hours for the mounted unit — they help with crowd control and search and rescue.  WISC-TV
  • Oak Bank hosted its annual Great Pumpkin Giveaway in Fitchburg, where local families enjoyed free pumpkins, tractor-drawn carriage rides, and goodie bags while making donations to a local charity—marking the start of fall traditions.  WISC-TV
  • A new 'Unconditionally Confident' event series in Monona launched recently—hosted by Michaela Mulroe—to break down disability stereotypes and encourage open dialogue. The free six-week series uses her personal experience to empower community members to challenge barriers and build meaningful connections.  WISC-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Madison native Rita Adair will open Bernell’s on the east side on Nov. 8 — a women-centered sports bar that features live blues music and soul food. She named the venue in honor of her late wife Bernell Hooker — a dedicated supporter of women’s sports — to celebrate her legacy.  WMTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Madison Vegan Fest returned to Lunney Lake Farm County Park where from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. local and regional vendors offered a mix of vegan foods and educational sessions on sustainable living—organizers confirmed the event will return next year.  WISC-TV
  • Madison Contemporary Dance and Hitterz Collective will present their annual Creative Movement Dance Concerts this weekend at Madison Youth Arts Center, showcasing dance styles from ballet, modern, hip hop, and krump with performers aged seven and older. Two performances remain available — tickets cost about $18.  WISC-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Madison Public Library is hosting voter registration events at multiple locations for National Voter Registration Week through Oct. 11. Volunteers and staff from the City of Madison Clerk’s Office will be available at libraries from 3—6 p.m. on weekdays and 12—3 p.m. on Saturday to help patrons register to vote or sign up as poll workers.  WMTV
  • Madison residents will have three fall leaf and yard waste collection opportunities this week—each neighborhood is set to receive pickups that occur within a week of the set-out date.  WMTV
