- ➤ The Dane County Humane Society is holding fee-waived adoption events throughout October to help over 200 animals, including long-term Lonely Hearts Club pets, find new homes. Lisa Bernard said a grant from the ASPCA is funding the waiver and adoptions are first come, first served—so visitors should be ready for longer wait times. WISC-TV
- ➤ NAMI and Alzheimer’s groups will host walks in Madison this weekend—community members can join to support mental health and raise awareness. Wisconsin State Journal
- ➤ Tens of thousands attended the World Dairy Expo in Madison where farmers showed off their cows in a beauty pageant-style contest—Laura Holtzinger of Big Time Genetics said her cows received baby oil for extra shine. Judges evaluated the animals on traits like body shape and udder attachment while exhibitors used live TVs and booths to highlight the event. Wisconsin Public Radio
- ➤ Today the McFarland Community Ice Arena celebrates the grand opening of its expanded facility by unveiling the new Starion Bank Rink and adding 13,500 square feet for training and community events from a $2.5 million loan and fundraising efforts. The event runs from 4 to 8 p.m. with a ribbon cutting, tours, open skate until 6 p.m., free shaved ice cream, and an evening Hocktoberfest featuring beer and live music. WISC-TV
- ➤ Neighborhoods in Madison will begin fall leaf and yard waste pickup the week of October 5. Residents must visit the yard waste website—entering their address—to check their set-out dates and follow placement rules away from roads and obstacles. City of Madison

- ➤ A new report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum says teacher turnover fell to 14% in 2024 and to 12.9% today—yet the numbers remain high. The report adds it is too early to know if schools are returning to pre-pandemic conditions or if they face a new norm. Wisconsin Public Radio

- ➤ On Friday, Madison set a new daily high record as a fall heat wave turned October weather into summer-like warmth—families in Sun Prairie enjoyed the extended pool hours at Prairie Athletic Club while climate experts warned that warmer falls are becoming more common. WMTV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Eight Wisconsin representatives introduced a bill to ban absentee ballot drop boxes in state elections—claiming the boxes do not secure voter confidence. The proposal follows a 2024 ruling that allowed their use and feeds the ongoing debate on election security. WKOW
- ➤ Gov. Tony Evers signed a bipartisan bill Friday to ban the misuse of AI-generated images— the law updates the state criminal code to outlaw synthetic intimate representations and the nonconsensual reproduction of private images, and it will take effect the day after publication. WKOW

- ➤ Dr. Amy Kind and her UW-Madison team developed the Area Deprivation Index—ADI—to show how income, housing, education and work affect health. The tool is used in Milwaukee and by Epic Systems to guide where to send nurses and share resources. WKOW
