CULTURE NEWS

  • Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center and the Madison Astronomical Society will host Moon Over Monona Terrace on Friday, October 3, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the William T. Evjue Rooftop Gardens—guests of all ages can view telescopes, attend guided sky tours, and enjoy a Kids’ Fun Zone with space bingo and constellation light boxes. Admission is free but tickets are limited—each patron may reserve up to eight tickets on a first-come, first-served basis.  City of Madison

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Middleton High School senior Alex Yu volunteered for ENGin, a nonprofit tutoring program that pairs American volunteers with Ukrainian students, and he formed an unexpected friendship with top Ukrainian student Anton. They meet weekly to discuss soccer and war — and Yu has started an ENGin club at Middleton to expand future tutoring efforts.  WKOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tellurian lost over $773,000 in 2024, with 75% of the loss coming from Dane County's underfunding, according to CEO Kevin Florek. Dane County risks losing its detox center+ it must pay more for the service to keep it running.  Wisconsin State Journal
  • Dane County Executive Melissa Agard will present a plan to freeze non-essential hiring at the County Board meeting on Oct. 23 amid the government shutdown—she said positions critical for public safety are exempt. The county faces a $31 million deficit as uncertainty over federal funding makes budgeting harder.  WISC-TV
  • Jaytona Lockhart is living on Madison’s streets—he hopes to secure housing as county funds run low after ARPA dollars ended and key programs were closed. Dane County officials said limited funding now makes it harder to serve those in need.  WISC-TV
  • Judge Maria Lazar announced her SCOWIS campaign on Oct 1—she planned to run for a judicial seat and bring renewed oversight to the local courts.  WISC-TV
  • A new juvenile detention center in Dane County moved forward in its state approval process yesterday after GEI Consultants shared its initial environmental assessment findings at a public meeting. If approved, the 40-bed facility — located on the border of Fitchburg and Oregon — will focus on restorative practices to lower youth recidivism as the public submits comments until Oct. 10.  WMTV
  • Judge Maria Lazar—of District II on the Wisconsin Court of Appeals—launched her campaign Wednesday for the state Supreme Court seat left open by Justice Rebecca Bradley. Lazar, a conservative who served as assistant attorney general under Gov. Scott Walker, said she aims to restore judicial dedication and end partisan tensions.  FOX 47

HEALTH NEWS

  • Eligible patients and staff can receive COVID-19 and flu vaccines at UW Health; starting Monday, Oct. 6, they can call their clinic or schedule a time on MyChart—patients six months and older, including pregnant individuals, are encouraged to get vaccinated.  WMTV
  • The FDA is recalling fresh cut cantaloupe sold under the brand names Harvest Cuts and Fresh and Finest because they may be contaminated with Listeria; no illnesses have been reported in Wisconsin. Consumers should throw away or return the products for a refund (the items come in plastic clamshell packaging) and (each package has a unique lot number).  WMTV
  • Tellurian Behavioral Health will end its contract with the Dane County Detoxification Center next year—CEO Kevin Florek said the move is due to ongoing funding issues affecting operations.  Wisconsin State Journal
