- ➤ At its Monday meeting, the Overture Center Foundation board in Madison elected Rev. Tony J. Patterson Sr. as its new chair—making history as the first person of color in this role—and Jim St. Vincent as vice chair for a one-year term. Several new board members also were elected to serve terms ranging from one to three years. WISC-TV
- ➤ Vegan Fest will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 4 at Lunney Lake Farm County Park in Madison—lead organizer Tara Mohan said the festival will offer vegan food, speakers and ideas on sustainable living. WMTV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, the Madison School Board approved changes to its 2025-26 budget that raised each board member’s annual stipend from $8,000 to $15,000—adding extra funds for the board president and vice president while they rejected a plan for district health benefits and extra training money. The measure, which costs about $60,100 more this cycle, comes after the board last raised its pay in 2015. The Capital Times

- ➤ Lawmakers in Congress have not passed an appropriations bill and a shutdown could force about 18,000 Wisconsin federal workers to be furloughed or work without pay—essential services, including Social Security and food aid, will still run while the impact remains uncertain. - ➤ Wisconsin Court of Appeals Judge Maria Lazar announced she is running for the Wisconsin Supreme Court to restore judicial integrity—she intends to counter partisan spending and bring an impartial perspective after Justice Rebecca Bradley said she would not seek reelection in 2026. Lazar, who served for seven years on the Waukesha County Circuit Court and worked as an assistant attorney general, is the second candidate to run for the seat. WKOW
