- ➤ The Alicia Ashman Library will celebrate its 25th anniversary on October 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with remarks by Library Director Tana Elias plus activities such as unveiling a time capsule, a historic exhibit, and community art projects to showcase the library’s past and future. - ➤ GiGi’s Playhouse Madison will build its forever home in Fitchburg to double its space — adding outdoor play, learning areas, tech rooms, a full kitchen and community area. The nonprofit will hold its annual Generation G Gala at 6 p.m. on Oct. 10 to raise money to keep its programs free for families. WMTV

- ➤ A University of Wisconsin study led by Professor Brian A. Burt found that Black men in engineering graduate programs struggled to form study groups and faced cultural disconnect—researchers interviewed 50 students who reported feeling isolated and pressured to code-switch amid challenging academic demands. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ducky, an endangered whooping crane from a local breeding program set for release at Horicon National Wildlife Refuge in October, died last Thursday after becoming infected with a highly pathogenic avian influenza strain. Foundation staff met Monday to decide on next steps for the remaining birds—and they have since taken extra precautions to prevent further spread of the virus. WISC-TV
- ➤ More than 300 people marched from Library Mall to the Capitol on Sunday, Sept 28 for climate justice and to back a lawsuit led by Kaarina Dunn. Youth advocates—arguing that state laws ignore climate risks—demanded faster change to protect health and the future. The Badger Herald

- ➤ The City of Madison started its Week Without Driving Challenge on Monday—asking residents to try buses, bikes, and walking so they better understand non-drivers; the challenge will run until Oct. 3. The Badger Herald
- ➤ Missy Hughes, a dairy industry leader and former Organic Valley executive who led the state Economic Development Corporation, today announced her campaign for Governor. She said she will build a Main Street Economy that creates jobs and supports workers in all 72 counties—drawing on her record of growing Organic Valley to $1 billion in sales. WKOW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ UW Health is now partnering with the Wisconsin Air National Guard's 115th Fighter Wing to provide clinical training for its medical teams at University Hospital — training occurs two days a month in the emergency department, burn unit and Trauma and Life Support Center. The program will expand in the future to include technicians, technologists, practice providers and pharmacists. WISC-TV
