COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dogs and their owners gathered at Hilldale yesterday for Yappy Hour, where vendors, a fetch area, and artists entertained participants—raising money for the Dane County Humane Society through $10 donations to help stray dogs get healthy and adoptable. Organizers said they will plan another event on Oct. 23 with a Halloween theme.  WKOW
  • Gigi's Playhouse Madison will host its ninth annual Generation G gala on Oct. 10th at the Madison Concourse Hotel to raise funds for free programs for people with Down syndrome. The event will feature performances by self-advocate ambassadors and Special Olympian Annie Mulligan while the organization plans to break ground next month on a new facility in Fitchburg.  FOX 47
  • 105.5 Triple M hosted a one-day Request-A-Thon event on Thursday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.—all donations went to Second Harvest Foodbank to help fight hunger during Hunger Action Month. For a minimum $40 gift, listeners requested any FCC-approved song and larger donations got their songs played faster as the Alliant Energy Foundation matched the first $20,000.  WMTV
  • The City of Madison's Community Development Division will host a free Path of Homeownership workshop on Oct. 11 at the Atrium at Villager Mall from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in collaboration with the Home Buyers Roundtable of Dane County and the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, with interested residents needing to register by Oct. 7.  WISC-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After more than 50 years in business, Rutabaga Paddlesports in Madison will close at the end of 2025. Owner Darren Bush said the store’s mission was to connect people with the outdoors — a goal that guided his work — and he will continue serving the community through Canoecopia and as a hospice chaplain.  WMTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fresco Opera held a free performance called Opera on the Point at Picnic Point on September 24—over 100 locals gathered around a bonfire to enjoy a family-friendly show full of spooky folklore and lively music. The company, co-founded by Melanie Cain and Frank Cain, will perform again on September 27 at 7 p.m.  Isthmus
  • Unjust Deeds exhibition will open at Sequoya Library in October to share the history of racial covenants that enforced segregation in Dane County; local historian Rick Bernstein—expert on the subject—will speak on October 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. A District 11 Book Club will feature The Color of Law on October 22 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and the exhibit will later travel to other Dane County Library locations through February.  City of Madison

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Madison residents planning a fire this fall are advised to use locally-sourced firewood — this helps prevent invasive pests and fungi from spreading. The Department of Natural Resources said wood must be bought on-site or be treatment-certified — a step to keep our fires safe.  WISC-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway urged Dane County, nearby cities, and the private sector to help fund the new 250-bed men's homeless shelter at 1902 Bartillon Drive after a preview on Sept.22—she stressed that sharing the estimated $4 million annual cost is needed. The city will cover $1.7 million while County Executive Melissa Agard prepares a budget proposal expected on Oct.1.  Isthmus
