COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Construction is underway on Madison’s first new library in a quarter century—called the Imagination Center—in the Reindahl Park neighborhood that has long lacked resources. The modern building, partly funded by a $4.5 million donation from the Madison Public Library Foundation and set to open next September, will offer both library functions and a space for neighbors to gather.  Wisconsin Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UW Badgers visited Sandburg Elementary on Monday to promote reading and support MMSD’s literacy initiative—pairing athletes with students to develop better reading habits. This second-year partnership aims to inspire students with interactive sessions and role models.  WKOW
  • Some Badger football players visited Sandburg Elementary School Monday morning to read to second graders and hand out free books under the UW Athletics partnership with the Madison Metropolitan School District—offering students a chance to connect with role models. The National Champion UW Women’s hockey team also visited the school to speak with the students.  WMTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Huma Ahsan, founder of Madison Immigration Law and former appeals court judge, launched her run for the Dane County Circuit Court (Branch One) at the Fitchburg Community Center. She said her campaign will make sure the law serves all people (no matter where they come from or how much they earn).  WISC-TV
  • Madison’s new homeless shelter on the east side nears completion with construction set to finish in early 2026—yet it needs over $4 million to operate year-round. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway toured the building today and called for private partnerships to cover staffing, utilities, and maintenance for this 24-hour facility.  WISC-TV
  • Today a bill was introduced in the Legislature to boost Northern Wisconsin's forestry industry and attract over $1 billion in private investment for a new production mill in Hayward that will convert low quality pulpwood into aviation fuel. State Sen. Mary Felzkowski said the proposal would be funded by tax credits and state bonds from the forestry account.  WKOW

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Wisconsin men's hockey team is ranked 20th in the USCHO preseason poll with 78 votes—this comes after a challenging season when they recorded a 13-21 record. The team returns key players and will open its season on Oct. 3 against Lindenwood before playing its first home game against Minnesota State on Oct. 16.  WISC-TV
  • Wisconsin football lost 27-10 to Maryland Terrapins at Camp Randall today—mistakes on offense and special teams led to the loss. The team will address quarterback issues as they prepare for a tough Oct. 4 game at Ann Arbor against No. 21 Michigan.  The Daily Cardinal
  • UW Health became the title sponsor for Badgers’ women’s sports—covering volleyball, hockey, basketball, soccer, golf, track and field, cross country, softball, tennis, swimming and rowing. The sponsorship supports the athletes both in competition and out of it.  WISC-TV
