EDUCATION NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Education ended grant programs for Hispanic-serving colleges, which means four Wisconsin schools such as Gateway Technical College and Herzing University may lose millions. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, as school is back in session, the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Wisconsin School Bus Association launched Operation Safe Stop to enforce rules that require drivers to stop for buses with flashing red lights. The campaign—running until Sept 26—aims to protect children boarding and exiting buses by issuing fines, demerit points, and higher insurance rates to violators.  WMTV
  • Today, the City of Madison is testing lane closures on Willy Street during rush hour as part of a $24,000 study funded by Safe Streets Madison that is showcased at the Willy Street Fair. City staff will survey the public and gather data until late October — a review that may lead to permanent changes for safer streets and improved parking.  WKOW
  • A rider said he preferred the quiet comfort of the Amtrak Hiawatha service from Milwaukee to Chicago, and state DOT officials gathered feedback from these trips. The department is using federal grants to study expanding service and adding routes with better access — plans that will shape future rail travel.  The Madison Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Sunday, nearly 200 people walked on Madison’s west side for a two-mile walk/run to raise money and awareness for ovarian cancer—organized by the Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance and supported by survivors, loved ones, and volunteers sharing personal stories to stress early detection.  WMTV
