ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Madison Fire Department contained a gas leak at Café Hollander on Hilldale Way when a grill fell during cleaning at 10:02 p.m. Thursday and people evacuated the building—MGE then finished the gas shut-off work.  WKOW

  • Camelot Square Chocolate Shoppe closed yesterday—offering free ice cream on its final day of service.  WISC-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A lawsuit filed against the Sun Prairie Board of Education alleges the board held closed meetings that broke Wisconsin's Open Meetings Law when discussing student safety and misconduct by a former dean—petitioners claim the board hid key details and ask a judge to stop closed sessions until full transparency is shown.  WISC-TV
  • The Sun Prairie Education Foundation will host its Keys to the Future benefit event next Thursday, September 25 at the Harvest Moon Pond Wedding and Event Venue to raise funds for teacher grants that support programs like hydroponics and STEM labs. The fundraiser offers games, prizes, silent auctions—and a raffle to boost classroom improvements.  FOX 47
  • Madison College opened its new $3.08 million dental learning clinic on Friday to train future dentists—this state-of-the-art facility on the Truax Campus offers 15 chairs with computers, a full sterilization center, and advanced learning technology. It supports the Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary Certificate Program that began work on Sept. 2.  WISC-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • More than 2,300 muskies were stocked in Madison-area lakes on Thursday, with Lake Wingra getting 100, Lake Monona 1,200 and Lake Waubesa over 1,000 to boost fishing since the fish do not reproduce enough naturally, and plans call for another 500 in Lake Monona in October — experts say the muskies, measuring 11 to 13 inches, will need 20 years to reach the 50-inch harvest size.  WMTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting in October, Madison will begin major work on John Nolen Drive—an estimated $42 million project funded mostly by federal dollars. Crews will rebuild streets, bridges, and a new space for pedestrians and bikes while shifting traffic from Broom Street to Lakeside Street until the project is complete in 2027.  WISC-TV
  • Law Forward filed a class action lawsuit against the city after 193 absentee ballots from Wards 56, 65, and 68 were not counted in last November's election— the suit seeks $175,000 in damages and names the city, its clerk's office, Deputy City Clerk Jim Verbick and former Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl as defendants; the city says it has made significant changes to its ballot processing to prevent a repeat problem.  FOX 47
  • The Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters to test all harvested deer for Chronic Wasting Disease during this fall season. Testing options include self-service kiosks, partnering businesses, at-home kits, or appointments—results come in one to two weeks and a positive test triggers a replacement harvest authorization.  WMTV
  • The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs awarded nearly $9.3 million in grants to four Wisconsin organizations to help homeless veterans through housing counseling, health care access, childcare, legal aid and financial planning. The funds came from the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program — designed to help veterans keep their homes and quickly rehouse those already unsheltered.  WMTV
