COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City officials said the new 250-bed homeless shelter at 1902 Bartillon Drive is months away from opening—its design limits the number of beds to control staffing, funding, and security costs while advocates worry it may not meet the growing need for shelter.  Isthmus
  • Xander, a smart and energetic police horse donated to the Madison Police Mounted Unit in 2008 and retired in 2011, passed away on Sept. 15—he was known for playful mischief like opening gates and chasing horses, and his service left a lasting mark on his team.  City of Madison

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mounds Pet Food Warehouse is hosting grand opening ceremonies at new Madison locations at 231 Junction Road — 4275 Lien Road as part of Neighborhood Pet Store Day, with events starting at 10 a.m. The festivities include free treats for pets and people, giveaways and exclusive sales at all four store locations on the 27th with some offers continuing on the 28th.  WISC-TV
  • Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream at Camelot Square on Fordem Avenue will close this Sunday and will mark its final day by giving away one free scoop to each customer. The company will open a new location down the street in 2026.  WISC-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Madison Symphony Orchestra opened its 100th season with a classical concert featuring works by Tchaikovsky and guest pianist Olga Kern as it marks the final year for longtime music director John DeMain. The season will continue with a dinner reception, a Saturday show with Cirque de la Symphonie and a DJ afterparty — the orchestra will begin its search for a successor after DeMain's 32-year tenure.  WKOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The UW Board of Regents will consider a $13.5 million expansion of the cyclotron lab to improve UW-Madison’s cancer research and treatment hub this week. Officials say the proposal is expected to boost research capacity + further details will follow after the meeting.  Wisconsin State Journal
  • On Thursday, Wisconsin Superintendent Jill Underly warned that the federal government used key funding as a bargaining chip in her State of Education address, calling the agency a bully to public schools. She said that a freeze on funding and unclear demands have hurt schools, and she urged unity to better support our students – a call to protect our education system.  Wisconsin Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Madison lakes were stocked with about 2,300 muskies Thursday based on each lake’s size—more fish will be added in October. The fish are provided by the DNR or fish farms and have been stocked every year since 1986 to support muskie fishing revenue.  WKOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. André Jacque said a Senate bill heard Wednesday would make graffiti or damage to historical markers a felony—extending penalties already in place. Lawmakers also proposed tougher punishments for human trafficking and new steps to support sexual assault survivors.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • Law Forward filed a class action lawsuit against the City of Madison stating that 193 absentee ballots were not counted in the November 2024 election because officials missed several opportunities to fix the error. The suit—filed on behalf of eight plaintiffs—seeks compensatory and punitive damages after an investigation described the issue as a profound failure by top election official Maribeth Witzel-Behl despite the uncounted votes not affecting any race outcomes.  WMTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Superman and other superheroes visited American Family Children’s Hospital on Wednesday, scaling windows to wave at patients and families while window cleaners from Green Window Cleaning Service said the fun day reminded them of the last visit in 2019 — a time that brought extra smiles to the hospital.  WMTV
