COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The YMCA of Dane County announced Tuesday it provided $268,000 in scholarships that allowed 66 children from 35 families to attend Y Summer Camp this summer—668 free camp weeks were awarded with daily lunches for 30 campers. The organization worked with nonprofits including DaneCatholic Charities and Madison Metropolitan School District to reach families in need.  WISC-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Missouri-based grocery chain led by the 1939 Group will buy Wisconsin's Festival Foods and Hometown Grocers, which run 51 stores, and the sale is expected to close after October—each brand will keep its own headquarters and name.  Wisconsin Public Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • A group of citizen scientists with the Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Association found the wreck of the F.J. King—a 144-foot cargo schooner that sank on Sept. 15—using sonar and remote vehicles on a July expedition near Baileys Harbor. The Wisconsin Historical Society is set to nominate the site for historic registers as experts warn that the wreck is protected by state and federal laws.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • Wisconsin author and Lawrence University professor David McGlynn released his debut novel 'Everything We Could Do' on September 15, drawing on his own NICU experience and research in a fictional town called Hanover—where the story follows Brooke, a mother of quadruplets born at 23 weeks, and Dash, a nurse with personal ties to the unit, as they face deep challenges.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • Film director Bill Rebane, 88, is filming a reimagined version of The Giant Spider Invasion in Hayward with 20 minutes of 1975-style footage to debut on Halloween and extend in 2026. Actor Dan Davies plays a 1970s newscaster in new scenes that honor the cult classic’s campy tone — a nod to Wisconsin’s film legacy.  Wisconsin Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dane County officials warn that traffic delays are expected near the Villages of Brooklyn and Oregon because of Luke Bryan’s concert at Klondike Farms on Thursday at 6 p.m.—about 13,000 fans will attend while event parking opens at 2 p.m. at the intersection of Highways 92 and 14.  WMTV
  • New projections from the Regional Data Group show that Dane County’s population will grow to 887,000 by 2050, which is 325,000 more than the 2020 count and will require about 160,000 new housing units—local planning supports the forecast. Madison is expected to reach 324,580 residents by 2030.  WKOW
  • Madison Common Council voted Tuesday night on a proposal to extend the contract for Dairy Drive, allowing Madison Street Medicine to run the site without city funding until April 2026. If the measure fails, demolition will proceed and all residents must leave by September 26—residents and supporters worried about losing a safe shelter.  WMTV
  • Gov. Tony Evers signed an executive order Monday that requires insurance companies to keep covering COVID-19 vaccines. He also directed state health agencies and the insurance commissioner to issue clear guidance as federal changes restrict vaccine eligibility—ensuring Wisconsinites keep access to their shots.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • Governor Tony Evers and the Department of Workforce Development announced a new round of grant applications for the Commercial Driver Training Grant that will help Wisconsin residents earn a Commercial Driver’s License with reimbursements between $10,000 and $30,000; applications close Oct. 28—eligible training providers must apply soon to meet the state’s need for skilled drivers.  WMTV
