COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, a Madison nonprofit hosted a back-to-school giveaway at Urban Triage at 2312 South Park Street where families collected free school supplies to help students succeed—organizers say the event supports self-sufficiency and community leadership.  WMTV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Great Dane Pub and Brewing Company announced it will close its Hilldale location on Nov. 8 due to declining sales and a changing restaurant and retail landscape. The pub will operate regular hours until its final day while guests with scheduled events are contacted and its other Madison locations continue brewing operations.  FOX 47
  • The Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company's Hilldale location will close in November due to falling revenue and a changing retail landscape— it will stay open with normal hours and a full menu until November 8.   • A report from UW-Madison’s High Road Strategy Center estimates Wisconsin has 320,000 immigrants—5% of the state’s population—whose work supports key industries like agriculture, manufacturing, and health care, and warns that new federal enforcement measures may lead to labor shortages.  Isthmus

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • More than 1.8 billion gallons of water have been treated to remove PFAS at a Marinette fire training facility, lowering levels at the site while many nearby wells still show unsafe contamination.   • Wisconsin lawmakers are reviewing a proposal that would require state agencies to use the IHRA definition of antisemitism when investigating hate incidents+ some local Jewish groups support the move to better track hate crimes while critics worry it may limit free speech.  Wisconsin Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • The University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center will be honored at the Badger Challenge fundraiser this weekend—featuring a bike event, run/walk and community events that recognize cancer patients. Cancer patient Shane Kieler, who was treated for a brain bleed in April, will run the 5K on Sunday and share his story to inspire others.  WMTV
  • Gov. Tony Evers signed Executive Order #275 directing the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to ensure residents have access to vaccines amid federal changes that had restricted seasonal COVID-19 shot approvals.
