CULTURE NEWS

  • The Rock River Valley Carvers kicked off their 19th annual carving show at Rock County fairgrounds Saturday as local wood carvers display art, hold competitions, and run vendor booths — the festival will continue through Sunday.  WMTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UW system leaders said that fall enrollment is up at eight campuses but overall numbers dropped by 96 because of a big decline in international students—new freshman enrollment increased by 3% and more details will be released later this fall.  Wisconsin State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Metro drivers union ratified a new contract with the city that gives extra yearly pay raises and shortens the wait for vacation bumps. The deal was approved by most drivers 9 months after the old contract expired—improving work terms.  Wisconsin State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Madison Heart Walk brought local residents together on Saturday at McKee Farms Park in Fitchburg to learn hands-only CPR and raise funds for heart health research. Delta Dental official Greg Theis explained that learning CPR can save lives based on his experience in Nashville.  WKOW
  • Local drummer Rokker suffered a cardiac arrest on stage at the Gamma Ray Bar in December 2024 when CPR responders alerted by the PulsePoint app arrived in time to save his life. After nine months of rehabilitation, he will return to the stage to raise funds for another drummer needing medical help—highlighting the importance of fast CPR response.  WKOW

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • After 58 years serving downtown diners, Porta Bella, an Italian restaurant opened in December 1967, could be replaced by a 16-story student apartment building—officials are reviewing the preliminary plans.  Wisconsin State Journal

  • An annual cross country meet in Monona was renamed the Glenn McNaughton Cross Country Invitational to honor the local teacher and coach for his 30+ years of service. The meet was held Saturday at the Monona Golf Course.  WMTV
  • Alabama beat Wisconsin 38-14 in Tuscaloosa as quarterback Ty Simpson threw for 382 yards and four touchdowns while Ryan Williams caught five passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns—Wisconsin's offense struggled with only one catch by Jayden Bullard and a 95-yard kickoff return by Vinny Anthony II, leaving the Badgers set to face Maryland next Saturday at Camp Randall.  WISC-TV
