CULTURE NEWS

  • Tattoo Fest returns for its second year at the Alliant Energy Center with over 275 tattoo artists and vendors showing work and competing in more than 20 categories. The festival ran on September 12 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., is running today from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.—and will run tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.  WKOW
  • The Rooftop Sculpture Garden at MMoCA is getting a facelift — it will have new native plantings, a water feature for pollinators, improved lighting, better accessibility, new artwork and a restored roof membrane. Crews will begin renovations in September and the garden will reopen in early spring 2026, all funded by an anonymous donor's nearly $3 million gift.  WMTV
  • The Art of Cheese Festival returns to Madison later this month—Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin will host the event from Sept. 25 to Sept. 28 to celebrate the state’s dairy industry.  WKOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Madison West High School swimmers Asha Shukla and Aurelia Bergstrom were reinstated to the school's swim exhibition program after families, teachers, and community members protested the decision that removed their disabled athlete spots—officials had not given a reason for the cut.  WISC-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Madison reached a collective bargaining agreement with Teamsters Local 120—representing Metro Transit operators and mechanics—that raises annual wages by 3 percent, adds a one-time bonus, and improves vacation accrual and safety measures. The contract will be introduced for adoption at the next Common Council meeting.  City of Madison
  • Missy Hughes will leave her job as CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation next week — she has helped bring in over $8 billion in investments and create or keep 45,000 jobs, and Gov. Evers will name her replacement soon.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • Thirteen local law enforcement agencies in Dane County are stepping up efforts in school zones to remind drivers to focus and avoid distractions as kids walk and bike, and these actions will continue next week. The push follows a rise in injuries and includes placing 'Slow Down' signs — available at police departments — to help drivers plan extra time during their commutes.  WKOW
  • Madison city leaders and community groups are reviewing three housing proposals—designed to increase building heights, modify setbacks, and allow two accessory dwelling units per lot—to meet rapid growth and affordability needs. The proposals will be introduced to the Common Council on September 16 and voted on in October.  WKOW
  • People across the country are losing their jobs for celebrating conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s death—Callie Wulk was fired after posting that his death was well deserved, and UW-Madison law professor Anuj Desai said free speech protects against government punishment but not private employer actions. Social media posts now carry heavier risks—workers may face termination for controversial remarks.  WMTV
