COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local nonprofit Back'd By Love will host the 'Feed the Feeder' donation drive on August 23 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Penn Park — 2101 Fisher St in Madison where community members can drop off cleaning supplies, toiletries, and gently used shoes while free natural hair products are given away as a thank-you.  WISC-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 23-year-old motorcyclist was flown via Med-Flight to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries after her bike hit another vehicle at high speed on U.S. Highway 151 Thursday night— the other driver, a 28-year-old man, was cited for driving without a valid license.  WISC-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday, a Dane County judge increased Noelia Martinez-Avila’s bond from $250,000 to $5 million after her wrong-way crash on July 20 near DeForest killed two teens—prompting an order for ICE to return her to Dane County custody.  WISC-TV

  • Mike Leckrone, a retired UW Marching Band director, launched the Leckrone Arts Fund in partnership with COPA to expand arts access for underserved communities—anchor Amber Noggle will interview him tonight on 27 News at 10 about a fundraiser planned for September.  WKOW
  • Pewaukee native David Koepp—one of Hollywood’s top screenwriters—is returning to the Jurassic Park franchise with Jurassic World: Rebirth, and he credits his Wisconsin upbringing and UW-Madison experience for shaping his work.  Wisconsin Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Tony Evers used a 2024 Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling to give state workers a 3% raise that began on Aug. 10 and to plan a 2% increase in 2026—this step bypassed the GOP-led committee that once approved budget pay raises.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources lost 500 positions since 2003—which has slowed permit processing and reduced work on habitat management. Agency officials and lawmakers say budget cuts and pending federal funding changes will continue to challenge the department.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • Metro Transit will expand its route D2 for all-day service in Verona starting Sunday as part of a partnership between Verona and Madison Metro—service will run every 30 minutes on weekdays and every 60 minutes during nights and weekends—linking key stops across the area.  WKOW
  • On August 15th, the Wisconsin Election Commission amended its orders after receiving feedback from Madison's Clerk's Office—now reorganizing to fix the uncounted absentee ballots from November. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said these changes will boost transparency and set new best practices for future elections.  City of Madison
