CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Raeven Johnson, 26, pleaded guilty to second-degree recklessly endangering safety and attempted battery to a public transit operator after she attacked a Madison Metro bus driver on Feb. 25—causing the bus to crash into the Asian House restaurant on Dempsey Road and injuring two people, with her sentencing set for Oct. 10. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Next Thursday the Madison Night Market will celebrate Wisconsin history & culture from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with Milwaukee-based vendors, live polka from Piano Fondue, and family activities like hands-on pottery and rock climbing on State Street. Visitors can get a free map from the Visitors Center to join a historical walking tour of Downtown Madison. WISC-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Dane County Park Commission announced that a public hearing to review proposed changes to parks fees will be held in a hybrid format—both in person and over Zoom—on August 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the Heritage Center; proposed changes include modest fee increases to better cover maintenance and operational costs while residents can register in person with paper forms or online by 5 p.m. on the day of the hearing. - ➤ Gov. Tony Evers announced he is submitting a FEMA request after extreme storms and flooding last weekend damaged homes—businesses and community centers across the state. Local officials and Wisconsin Emergency Management confirmed early damage reviews suggest the state has met the threshold for federal aid required for a presidential disaster declaration. WISC-TV
- ➤ Madison officials updated the ADA Transition Plan to remove barriers for deaf and hard of hearing residents—mandatory training will be completed by year-end and improvements in language access are planned. Public comments will be accepted until Aug. 23, and the proposal will go before the city council in September. Isthmus
- ➤ Madison CDA officials broke ground on redeveloping the Triangle neighborhood—transforming outdated public housing into 164 new affordable homes, CDA offices and community spaces planned to serve 355 residents. - ➤ The City of Madison Engineering Division will cut the ribbon next week on the reconstructed Wilson Street Corridor at 9 a.m. on Aug. 20 at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Wilson Street—meeting at the plaza that leads to Monona Terrace—where city staff and aldermen are set to speak.
