COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Verona Area High School will host its second annual Back to School Block Party on Aug 24 from noon to 2 p.m. Community members will access vaccinations from Walmart, free vision screenings by the Lions Club, and school supplies — organized by the school’s Black Student Union.  WISC-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Verona man died when his motorcycle struck an SUV at 5:20 p.m. on Thursday on the 2600 block of South Seminole Highway in Fitchburg—Fitchburg police and the Village of Oregon Police Department with support from the Dane County Sheriff's Office investigated the crash.  WKOW
  • Fitchburg police said a 54-year-old Verona resident riding a motorcycle collided with an SUV on the 2600 block of South Seminole Highway around 5:20 p.m. Thursday and later died at a hospital.  WISC-TV

  • Madison Police are searching for 38-year-old Grace E. Dwyer, who was last heard from on Aug. 2 — if she is seen, contact her mother or Detective Roberta Stellick at 608-245-3696.  FOX 47

  • Madison illustrator Megan Stout gathered ideas from Madison Reddit to create her Hippie Christmas cover that honors our local move-out tradition of leaving items on the curb. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dane County Emergency Management conducted a backup test of its 144 outdoor warning sirens on August 8 at noon after a technical problem halted the scheduled test on August 6 — the system normally tests monthly to alert people of severe weather.  WKOW
  • Wisconsin Public Radio will lose about $6 million in federal support when the Corporation for Public Broadcasting shuts down after Congress cut $1.1 billion of its funding. WPR Director Sarah Ashworth said the station existed before the CPB and will keep serving listeners, but changes such as music licensing are still unclear—details will emerge as decisions are made.  Wisconsin Public Radio
