COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thousands of craft beer lovers will attend the Great Taste of the Midwest at Olin Park on Saturday, August 9 from 1 until 6pm. A new state law requires breweries to pay a $1,250 fee for a two-year permit to distribute beer in Wisconsin—prompting 60 breweries to drop out while 40 others step in.  WMTV
  • Madison will host Ride the Drive 2025 on Sunday, August 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., closing over 2+ miles of streets in three downtown parks for a free event that features four activity hubs with games, giveaways, and live music. Participants can join activities like bike safety checks and a slow pedal parade while enjoying food, water stations, and other hands-on displays.  City of Madison

  • Madison police arrested a man for alleged burglary at West Towne Mall after officers responded to a call about broken glass and found stolen merchandise in duffel bags early Tuesday morning (he faces charges of burglary, attempted burglary, criminal damage and possession of burglarious tools).  FOX 47

  • UW-Madison’s new SoulFolk Collective research lab launched this spring to map Black-affirming spaces in Madison and share local stories—creating a modern version of the Green Book. Researchers led by Jessica Lee Stovall have conducted go-along interviews and captured dashcam footage while preparing programming for the upcoming Center for Black Excellence and Culture in south Madison.  The Capital Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school students in the Madison Metropolitan School District improved their AP exam results last spring when 2,043 students took 4,521 tests with 80.2 percent scoring three or higher—the highest marks recorded as the average score rose from 3.40 to 3.54. MMSD officials said the performance shows what happens when high expectations pair with strong support.  WISC-TV

  • Madison naturalist and author Andrea Debbink released her new guidebook Urban Trails: Madison, which details 40 local hiking routes—including family-friendly paths and tips on local amenities—to help residents discover less crowded spots close to home.  Wisconsin Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Madison announced road closures for Ride the Drive on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as streets including John Nolen Drive, Williamson Street, and U.S. 151—set to have a signed detour along Johnson, Gorham and Park Streets + controlled access to the Machinery Row parking lot and Patterson Street—will be impacted, and drivers must remove vehicles by 8 a.m. to avoid delays on some Metro routes.  WISC-TV
