  • The Streets Division is providing extra daily trash, recycling, and large item collections in the downtown move out area since August 4 and will continue until August 22—residents are asked to follow the rules for carts, electronics recycling, and donation of usable items to manage the roughly one million pounds of annual move out trash.  City of Madison

CRIME NEWS

  • UWPD officers responded at 10 a.m. after a passerby reported a suspicious grenade-like object on the UW Arboretum boardwalk on Monday—bomb squad confirmed it was a training device and the area was secured with Arboretum Drive reopening by 11:30 a.m.  WISC-TV
  • Andrea Whitaker, accused in a poisoning plot targeting southern Wisconsin women, had her bond set at $15 million during a virtual court appearance in Rock County on Monday—she faces conditions including no contact with victims and surrender of her passport as she is charged with attempted homicide and related crimes.  WMTV
  • Madison, Wis. — A Dane County Court Commissioner set a signature bond Monday for Brandi Grayson, founder and CEO of non-profit Urban Triage, who turned herself in after a July 9 alleged break-in at her ex-partner's home and now faces charges of disorderly conduct with domestic abuse assessments and criminal damage to property ahead of a pre-trial conference set for Sept. 19.  WISC-TV

  • Dane County Executive Melissa Agard announced on Monday that August is Black Business Month to celebrate Black entrepreneurs and support local programs that help with funding, mentoring, and technical help. The county’s move follows a 30% increase in Black-owned businesses from 2017 to 2022—showing a strong push for a fairer business environment.  WMTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Health Services said on Monday that 86.4% of students met the minimum vaccination requirements for the 2024-25 school year, a drop from last year. It noted that unfamiliarity with a new meningitis shot rule for grades 7 to 12 may be causing the decline as about 89.3% met the meningitis requirement, and a CDC report found that kindergarteners remain behind in vaccine protection.  FOX 47
  • American Family Children's Hospital supports breastfeeding mothers during World Breastfeeding Week by providing lactation services for neonatal intensive care patients in Madison. The hospital's program has achieved human milk feeding rates at discharge between 75 and 88% over the past five years.  WISC-TV
  • Public Health Madison and Dane County warned that measles poses a high risk after nine cases were confirmed in Wisconsin—officials say the cases were linked to travel outside the area. The agency urged residents to get the MMR vaccine—its best protection against severe complications such as pneumonia and seizures.  WMTV
