CRIME NEWS

  • A 30-year-old man — shot on Madison’s north side and critically injured when police found him early Tuesday morning at an apartment building on the 2100 block of Schlimgen Avenue — died on Friday, and detectives are now treating his death as a homicide while questioning a person of interest after recovering a gun from the scene.  WISC-TV
  • A convicted felon named Lloyd D. Watson was arrested Friday in Sun Prairie when a tactical response team executed a search warrant at an apartment complex on South Bird Street—where officers found several firearms including a stolen AR-15—and one officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the arrest.  WKOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art announced its Rooftop Cinema lineup for the 2025 season, featuring four movies inspired by artworks from the Wisconsin Triennial exhibition (on display until Sept. 14). Screenings begin at 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 31 with free admission and snacks available (rain will move films to the Museum Lecture Hall).  WISC-TV

  • Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, a former emergency room nurse, announced Friday that she is running for governor after Gov. Tony Evers decided not to seek a third term — she pledged to protect reproductive rights, invest in public schools and rebuild the economy.  WMTV
  • On Thursday, lawmakers at the State Capitol asked for a special task force to investigate missing and murdered Black women and girls — Rep. Shelia Stubbs, Attorney General Josh Kaul, community leaders, and family members supported a 17-person panel that will recommend safety improvements; Stubbs expects a bill number for the task force in the next 10 days.  WMTV
