COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Middleton's Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 93 will host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at Morey Airport on Sunday, July 13 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.—attendees will enjoy pancakes, eggs, sausage, cinnamon rolls, coffee, milk, and orange juice while meeting local pilots and viewing aircraft as donations of $10 for adults and $5 for children support youth aviation programs.  WISC-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Deontrae C. McIntosh, a 21-year-old Madison man, pleaded guilty on April 29 to distributing cocaine and heroin on four occasions between September and November 2024 and was sentenced to six years in federal prison with five years of supervised release plus an extra year-and-a-half after his release was revoked—he was arrested following a foot chase that ended with officers seizing drugs, fentanyl, and a loaded handgun with a machinegun conversion device.  WMTV
  • A Monroe man was arrested after a high-speed chase on I-90/94 that crossed county lines, police reported five hours ago.  WISC-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Tony Evers signed a $111 billion state budget on July 3 after bipartisan talks and said the plan added $1.4 billion for K–12 schools while leaving some issues unresolved — he said his administration will work on closing the Green Bay Correctional Institution and will announce reelection plans soon.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • Three finalists have been named for the next police chief in Madison—MPD Captain Stephanie Drescher, MPD Acting Chief John Patterson, and Milwaukee PD Assistant Chief Steven Johnson. The Board of Police and Fire Commissioners will conduct final interviews on Aug. 14 and later share a recorded Q&A for public viewing.  WMTV
  • At a Transportation Commission meeting this week, Metro Transit staff outlined plans to fix accessibility issues on the bus rapid transit system after feedback from riders with disabilities. The improvements include additional signage—widened yellow lines at station entrances—ongoing driver training, and repeated safety reviews to ensure proper deployment of bridge plates.  The Capital Times
  • Goodman Pool has updated its rule so that children under 16 now must be accompanied by an adult after a series of eight safety incidents raised concerns earlier in the summer; Parks Community Services Manager Terrence Thompson said the pool launched a monitor program to assist lifeguards—aiming to enhance safety.  WISC-TV
  • The City of Madison received two bids for Block 113's redevelopment, a plan to transform the former Brayton Lot near the State Capitol. City staff will review proposals (which include homes and shops) and check that they meet Federal Transit Administration rules (which require affordable housing for those earning 60% or less of the Area Median Income) as they plan to start construction between 2027 and 2029 if a bid wins.  WKOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Investigative journalist Mariah Blake’s new book shows that PFAS chemicals were first used during the Manhattan Project for nuclear research—these chemicals later ended up in everyday products from 3M and DuPont and were known to be harmful from early tests. She said people in Wisconsin have pushed the state to act faster to regulate these chemicals to better protect their communities.  Wisconsin Public Radio
