COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The YMCA of Dane County is offering a free eight-week water safety program called Safety Around Water to 100 children at its branches in East Madison, West Madison, and Sun Prairie—partnering with Reach Dane to teach lifesaving water skills that can help prevent emergencies—ensuring local kids learn critical skills during the program.  FOX 47
  • The Madison-Rafah Sister City Project will hold a Summer Silent Auction starting Friday at noon until 11 p.m. on Sunday, July 20 to support humanitarian aid for Gaza — original artwork donated by local artists is on display at Java Cat Coffee at 4221 Lien Road. Residents are invited to an artists meet-and-greet on Thursday, July 17 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. — proceeds will aid humanitarian efforts through the Middle East Children's Alliance.  FOX 47

CRIME NEWS

  • Madison man Vince Hildestad was found competent to stand trial after being accused of setting an apartment building on fire on May 20 on the 1700 block of Blossom Lane — his signature bond was set at $500 with conditions requiring him to avoid the property and not possess incendiary devices, and he will appear for a preliminary hearing on July 30.  WMTV
  • Madison police are investigating after a man was possibly shot in the arm early on July 4th near downtown — he said he was either hit by a bullet or struck by a firework while walking near an apartment on North Bartelt Ct. at 1:45 a.m. and a family member later brought him indoors.  WISC-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Researchers have estimated that when Madison beaches close because of toxic water from runoff, the city loses millions in potential economic activity each summer. Federal budget cuts may reduce funding for water quality monitoring—raising concerns that future closures could further hurt local tourism and spending.  The Capital Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin announced changes to student support services that include dissolving the current diversity division and moving its programs to the Division for Teaching and Learning, the Office of Human Resources, and Data, Academic Planning — Institutional Research. The reorganization follows a working group review aimed at strengthening academic support, well-being, community engagement, and financial aid without affecting current student scholarships.  WKOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A draft report from the Wisconsin Elections Commission revealed nearly 200 absentee ballots went uncounted in November because the City Clerk’s Office lacked a proper tracking system — the report noted delays and lack of urgency, and city officials are reviewing the findings and will discuss recommendations at a July 17 meeting.  WMTV
