Good morning, Madison. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 6th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Natalie Popp, the new Miss Wisconsin Teen, spent the Fourth of July weekend in Milton as she toured Milton House—the only authenticated Underground Railroad station open to the public—and attended the Fourth of July Festival at Schilberg Park. She has focused on honoring veterans after volunteering with 100-year-old WWII veteran Dr. Lew Harned and will visit towns statewide before competing for Miss America Teen in September.  WMTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Tony Evers signed the state's $111 billion budget after a 19-14 Senate vote and a 59-39 Assembly vote that traded tax cuts for more spending on higher education, schools and child care. The deal also added Medicaid dollars, boosted special education and university funds, and set money aside for a future Green Bay prison plan + conservation projects while showing bipartisan compromise.  Wisconsin State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • On July 5, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services celebrated the 15th anniversary of the state's smoke-free indoor air law that took effect on July 5, 2010 - state officials said the law lowered adult smoking from 19%-12% and youth smoking from 17%-3% over that time.  WKOW
  • Madison Finance Committee created a new project position to fight opioid abuse in Dane County by managing an Overdose Fatality Review Action Plan as part of the Pathways to Recovery Madison and Dane County project funded by a $1.2 million grant. Applicants are under review and interviews will be scheduled with hiring expected by the end of October (an effort to address high opioid death rates and neonatal abstinence syndrome).  The Badger Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Saturday's Madison Mallards game, the first 1,000 fans received a free 'Neverminds' snow globe giveaway from Festival Foods and WKOW 27 News — the globe is styled like Nirvana's 1991 album cover with Maynard G.
