Good morning, Madison. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 5th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Union Cab of Madison and Disability Pride Madison are offering free rides to the Disability Pride Festival on July 26 to help people get from their homes+bus stops to Warner Park tennis courts where the event runs from noon to 5 p.m.  WISC-TV
  • Garver Feed Mill is hosting weekly Food Truck Fridays and other community events that bring local businesses, artists and groups together. The events arm (Garver Events) is partnering with local organizers to use its large outdoor patio and may help guide plans for nearby parkland (further planning is underway).  Isthmus

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local fireworks sellers reported that fireworks prices stayed steady this Fourth of July because early orders helped them avoid most tariff hikes — a few last-minute shipments did face heavy fees, and sellers warned that future celebrations may see higher prices. This report reflects cautious optimism despite some customer concerns about increased costs.  WKOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Architect Kenton Peters (93) died Sunday and was known for his bold designs on the UW campus and downtown, including the Marina Condominiums and UW Foundation Building. His work changed Madison’s look and many of his buildings still stand today.  Wisconsin State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials introduced three new housing proposals on June 11 that would let duplexes be built in any neighborhood, let homeowners split deep lots, and ease downtown rules to create more affordable homes. The plans aim to reverse exclusionary zoning that has long kept people of color and low-income residents from building wealth, and they have broad council support despite concerns over high conversion costs.  Isthmus
