COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Multiple communities in South Central Wisconsin will host fireworks displays for Independence Day, with Madison hosting the Madison Mallards Fireworks at 2390 N Sherman Ave — scheduled at 9:30 p.m. Other cities such as Portage, Verona, Lake Geneva, and Jefferson will hold shows from July 2 to July 12 to offer residents many choices for celebration.  WMTV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A building in Town of Springdale was declared a total loss Thursday night after a fire just before 7 p.m. in the 8600 block of Davis Street caused about $325,000 in damages with no one hurt, and a county investigation is ongoing.  WISC-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A woman reported that burglars broke into her home on Madison's south side in the 1900 block of Lake Point Drive around 10 p.m. Thursday, stealing cash and a backpack while leaving clothing behind and police are investigating the incident.  WISC-TV
  • Richard Cunningham Jr., 44, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman on a Dane County bike path in March 2023 and was sentenced on Friday to 17 years in prison with 15 years of extended supervision after DNA evidence and GPS data linked him to the incident while charges of strangulation and felony bail jumping were dismissed.  WISC-TV
  • A Dane County judge convicted Kore Bommeli Adams on Friday of two counts of attempted first degree intentional homicide for a poisoning scheme that targeted her Middleton neighbors with ricin in spring 2014 — sentencing is scheduled for August 15 and she faces more charges in an Oklahoma homicide case over a missing roommate.  WKOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Historical Foundation announced on Thursday that the fundraising campaign for the new Wisconsin History Center is complete, boosted by a $12 million gift from W. Jerome Frautschi that brought his total contribution to $37.1 million and nearly covered a quarter of the $160.5 million cost. The center—expected to draw 20,000 visitors a year—will open on Capitol Square in late 2027.  WKOW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Businesses on Regent Street are preparing for two Morgan Wallen concerts this weekend at Camp Randall, which are expected to draw tens of thousands of fans and boost the local economy. Jason Ilstrup of Downtown Madison Inc. said local shops are adding staff—just like on game days—to get ready for a busy weekend and more upcoming concerts.  WMTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Madison will host a Disability Pride Flag Raising Ceremony on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Municipal Building—local leaders including the mayor and disability advocates will speak to honor the ADA's 35th anniversary and emphasize the city's commitment to inclusion.  FOX 47
  • The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Friday that UW Health is not required to bargain with its nurses because Act 10 ended those rules — a decision reached after a 2022 agreement averted a strike. UW Nurses United stated they will keep fighting for better bargaining rights.  WISC-TV
