  • The River Food Pantry in Madison is inching closer to meeting its construction campaign goal for a new building on Packers Avenue— the facility will be three times larger than its current location and will offer a drive-thru, classrooms and free clothes to serve more residents.  WKOW

CRIME NEWS

  • Madison Police arrested a 38-year-old man—Jeffry Harmon—on the 100 block of State Street on Wednesday night at 8:30 for threatening others with a knife and he was taken to a hospital for clearance before being sent to Dane County jail.  WKOW
  • Tamar Beasley, a Madison woman who pleaded guilty in April 2025 for shooting the father of her children, was sentenced yesterday to 10 years in prison with 10 years of supervision — court records show she was caught on video at a Northport Drive apartment complex in April 2024.  WKOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UW-Madison scientists say federal funding delays have resulted in a smaller fall graduate class as David Brow’s biochemistry program admitted only 11 students instead of the usual 20—prompting worries that fewer trainees will weaken lab work. Experts caution that further cuts may worsen research efforts—forcing labs to struggle with basic upkeep and progress.  Wisconsin Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials unveiled new plaza designs at the top of State Street to add tables, planters, and programming that aim to boost public safety and pedestrian traffic—local businesses expressed concern about changes that might affect parking and delivery operations. Planners will hold a winter meeting to review final designs as they work with community partners to address ongoing issues.  Isthmus
  • Wisconsin lawmakers proposed new bills to address emergency medical services shortages—especially in rural areas—by offering tuition reimbursement for EMS training and boosting ambulance reimbursements. The Senate passed the tuition reimbursement bill last week without funding, and legislators hope future budgets will support the program.  WISC-TV

  • A new mobile vision van will launch this fall to provide free vision screenings at multiple schools in partnership with MMSD. The Bright Eyes program led by Combat Blindness International will follow up with students who fail in-school tests—making sure children get the care and glasses they need.  WMTV
