  • UW-Madison PhD candidate Tehereh Rahimi, who came from Iran in 2018, said she feels strong worry for her family in Tehran amid ongoing conflict. UW-Madison professor John Hall noted that the conflict has deeply affected many Iranians—Rahimi said her loved ones face danger—and added that the personal burden she feels shows the broad impact of the crisis.  FOX 47

  • At the Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest, five tech start-ups showcased innovative products at the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Conference in Madison, with Neenah-based Phoenix-Aid winning the grand prize for a new multi-layer bandage for chronic wounds, Equability offering an adaptive clothing service for people with disabilities + Sea-Change Silicides, Galasys and Strudel AI proposing solutions for implants, dairy waste, and technical support + these companies aim to improve services locally and abroad.  Wisconsin Public Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Concerts on the Square returns today in downtown Madison with six weeks of live music starting at 7 p.m. and residents are invited to set out blankets by 3 p.m. while city officials close several downtown streets & adjust metro routes to support the event.  WMTV
  • Popular country singer Morgan Wallen will perform at Camp Randall Stadium this weekend in concerts that will be the first since 1997, and UW-Madison Police will manage heavy traffic including closing Monroe Street and N Breese Terrace. The concerts are expected to draw over 80,000 people each — similar to football games with metal detectors and clear bag policies in place.  WMTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that state regulators can force landowners to clean up PFAS, known as forever chemicals, before they are labeled hazardous. The 5-2 decision ends a long dispute among regulators, businesses and environmentalists — it may speed up cleanup work in cities like Madison.  WISC-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Tony Evers threatened a veto of the state budget because it did not include direct payments to child care centers — money that helped keep centers open during the pandemic — and said cutting the program would hurt kids and the economy. He urged lawmakers to resume negotiations so the full funding could continue.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • Madison officials announced that the second phase of the Highland Avenue project will begin Monday as the city closes southbound access at the VA Hospital driveway and the westbound on-ramp from Highland Avenue to Campus Drive to replace wastewater infrastructure near UW Hospitals and Clinics. Traffic will be directed to a U-turn until closures end on July 28 — after which stage three will last until late August or early September.  FOX 47
  • Residents in southeast Madison said they want more mixed-use housing and safer streets during listening sessions on the Southeast Area Plan — they highlighted issues like speeding, poor transit access, and limited community spaces while city officials prepare to update the plan this summer and complete it in 2026.  The Capital Times
