Good morning, Madison. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 13th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • A man convicted in a brutal sexual assault and beating on a UW-Madison student in 2023 was sentenced to 30 years in prison—followed by 20 years of supervision.  FOX 47
  • Brandon A. Thompson, 29, pleaded guilty in October to three felonies and was sentenced last Thursday to 30 years in prison for raping and severely beating a UW student on Sept. 3 — the attack left the victim with a traumatic brain injury and a broken jaw — while surveillance video showed he stalked her after drinking at a Fitchburg bar.  Wisconsin State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Author Jon Hickey’s debut novel Big Chief follows a tight-knit tribal community in the fictional Passage Rouge Nation where rival candidates fight for the presidency by any means necessary — reflecting debates over belonging and identity inspired by real Native communities.  Wisconsin Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Dane County Land and Water Resources Department is accepting applications from school and community groups to add free native plant gardens that help clean water and slow stormwater runoff. Since 2016, over 46,000 plants have been given out — applications are due by June 30.  FOX 47

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Madison mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway unveiled new zoning changes on Wednesday to boost the city's housing supply by letting duplexes be built in all residential areas and allowing homeowners to create second units in deep backyards—plans that also fast-track permits for downtown projects. The Common Council will review the proposals on Tuesday—part of the Housing Forward Plan aiming to add 15,000 homes by 2030.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • Rep. Mark Pocan said that residents near Dane County Regional Airport did not receive $18 million in federal funds to reduce noise from F-35 jets because the Department of Defense denied the application. Officials will work to find other options—an open grant for noise abatement in July offers a new chance—and they remain focused on addressing the long-standing concerns of nearby residents.  Wisconsin State Journal
  • A new report by the Wisconsin Policy Forum finds Wisconsin trails other states in federal payments, receiving $14,700 per person in fiscal year 2022 compared to a national average of $16,606—ranking 41st overall. The study warns that if proposed federal budget changes take effect, planned cuts to programs such as Medicaid may significantly affect vulnerable residents.  Wisconsin Public Radio
