Good morning, Madison. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 6th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Greater Madison MPO’s RoundTrip program launches Bike Buddies — a new initiative pairing experienced bike commuters with newcomers during Bike Week. The program will let beginners ride with experts to learn safe routes and gain confidence in biking skills.  WISC-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new study by the GLIFWC shows that wild rice, important to Ojibwe lifeways, has declined over 30 years due to climate change, heavy rains, floods and motorboat use. Researchers found the plant is very vulnerable during early growth — long-term surveys support these findings — and urge careful watercraft use and reduced chemical runoff near lakes.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that state park fees — including fishing licenses and trail passes — will be waived during Free Fun Weekend on June 7-8 so visitors can explore more than 120 state parks and join free fishing clinics. The event also celebrates 125 years of state parks — offering activities like hiking, biking and camping without extra costs.  WISC-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Madison Police Department launched a data-driven traffic safety plan now through September 1 to reduce dangerous driving by using crash data to spot dangerous intersections and boost patrols weekly—these measures follow rising community concerns about road safety. The department will review the data at summer’s end to decide on future steps.  City of Madison
  • The U.S. Department of Justice said on Wednesday that the Wisconsin Elections Commission violated the Help America Vote Act by not offering a process for voters to file complaints—an issue that follows a 2022 case. The DOJ warned it will withhold future U.S. Election Assistance Commission funds unless the commission fixes this problem, noting that over $77 million has already been received.  WISC-TV
  • The UW Board of Regents re-elected Amy B. Bogost as president and Kyle Weatherly as vice president on Thursday. Bogost and Weatherly, who joined the board in May 2020, will serve their second terms—continuing their leadership of the UW system.  WISC-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Several Wisconsin health care systems have quietly removed diversity, equity and inclusion language from their websites after a federal funding ban prompted changes—SSM Health, Aurora Health, UW Health and Ascension all updated their pages without notifying the public. Local advocacy groups say that while these systems still pledge to provide high-quality care, the shifts may eventually weaken efforts to address ongoing health disparities.  Isthmus
