COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Voting for the Best of Madison 2025 readers' poll is now live, and readers can cast their vote for their favorite nominee in each category on the voting page.  WISC-TV
  • Monday night, about 500 high school musicians from 11 local schools performed at the Duck Pond for the Mallards' game to attempt a world record as the largest pep band by playing the National Anthem + fan-favorite tunes. Mallards' President Vern Stenman said he hopes the event will grow + become a lasting Madison tradition.  WMTV
  • Residents in the Near East Side met Monday to share concerns about safety on Williamson Street after a crash hit Mother Fool's Coffee Shop last month, marking its fourth collision with the building since 2012. Del Lorenson of the Marquette Neighborhood Association said measures such as installing safety bollards and reviewing ideas from Regent Street's redevelopment will be considered to address speeding and high traffic.  WKOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Madison Arts Commission sought artists to create temporary outdoor installations for the Teejop Community History Public Art Project that will honor local Indigenous heritage—exhibitions will run from August 1 to November 1, 2026. The request for qualifications opened on June 1, with initial proposals due by July 8 at 11:59 p.m., and selected finalists will be notified in August with an orientation on August 22.  City of Madison
  • Monona Terrace has announced a free Concerts on the Rooftop series starting this Thursday, June 5, with the rooftop and Lake Vista Café opening at 5:30 p.m. Live performances will run from 7 to 9 p.m. against the scenic backdrop of Lake Monona and downtown Madison.  City of Madison

  • State lawmakers propose a bill that will fine those falsely claiming pets as service animals $200 for a first offense and $500 for later offenses — a measure intended to protect legitimate service animal users and businesses. The legislation, co-authored by Sen. Rachael Cabral-Guevara and Rep. Paul Tittl, will also update the state’s service animal definition to match federal law — adding stricter rules for emotional support animals in housing.  Wisconsin Public Radio

  • Wisconsin residents have received calls from telemarketers selling health care plans that lack essential benefits—consumers are urged to review documents carefully and use regulated resources like HealthCare.gov and local navigators to avoid mounting bills.   • After a five-day strike and months of bargaining, nurses at Meriter ratified a new two-year hospital contract that includes an 8% wage increase and improved staffing guidelines—union leaders held a celebratory press conference on Sunday with Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway before nurses returned to work.  WKOW
