ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Derrick Allen, 48, died on Thursday at a Madison hospital after being hit by a vehicle Monday evening near Kennedy Road — Northport Drive, and investigators continue testing his injuries.  WMTV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • City leaders and local business representatives will join a walking tour on Tuesday, June 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Southeast and Southwest Madison to gather feedback from up to 300 businesses—organized by Blueprint Events—to guide new planning efforts.  City of Madison

CRIME NEWS

  • A fire displaced five people from an east side apartment on Blossom Lane last week, with firefighters finding flames in the basement at around 6 a.m. on May 20 that caused about $100,000 in damage and led the Madison Fire Department to investigate arson— a person of interest was identified.  WISC-TV
  • Madison police arrested a 24-year-old woman for operating while intoxicated after she crashed at 10:20 p.m. on Wednesday night at the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin Streets with three young children in her vehicle (none was buckled), and the children were later given to a family member while she faces charges of child neglect and driving with children under 16.  WISC-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On June 23, the Madison School Board will review a preliminary $564.4 million budget for a 25,000-student district that includes a 3.4% spending increase and will raise property taxes for an average home (about $834 more than last year). Final approval is expected in October as state aid levels (a key factor) and confirmed enrollment guide final adjustments.  Wisconsin State Journal
  • Madison Public Library marked its 150th anniversary in May and reflected on its long history as a community hub offering free programs, services, and unique items like birding backpacks from its nine branches.   • The City of Madison has opened a secure ballot drop box at Fire Station 1 (316 W Dayton St.) for voters who requested absentee ballots for the Special Election on June 17. Two sworn election officials will retrieve the sealed ballots and deliver them to the Clerk’s Office.  City of Madison
