  • Habitat for Humanity of Dane County launched a new program to help veterans with needed home repairs including roof, plumbing, electrical, exterior, accessibility, and weatherization work — the initiative is backed by the Home Depot Foundation. CRIME NEWS

  • A Windsor man was arrested on Tuesday after he crashed head-on into a dump truck on State Highway 19 near Forest Park Drive—he admitted to looking at his phone and failed field sobriety testing—and he was charged with operating while intoxicated on his fifth offense and cited for open intoxicants, inattentive driving and driving left of center.  WISC-TV
  • A Madison man was charged with neglect after a 6-year-old shot themself in the head when the child found a gun left in an apartment on the 100 block of Milky Way Monday morning — his bond is set at $7,000 and the child remains in critical condition.  WMTV
  • Madison police are searching for 53-year-old Vince Hildestad—who was last seen after leaving UnityPoint-Meriter’s emergency room around 1 a.m.—as his family said he had no cellphone or vehicle and may be without his Parkinson’s medication.  WISC-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local artist Ken Fager started the Mini WI project in 2020 to hide mini Capitol replicas around Madison—over 6,000 have been placed—to spread random acts of kindness begun during the pandemic and sustained by donations.  WISC-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new report released Wednesday by Madison-based Singlewire Software found that many school staff felt their school entrances were not secure, with only 17% saying they felt completely safe. More than 80 local schools have adopted the Visitor Aware digital check-in system— which screens visitors through watchlists and sex offender databases— and the Madison Metropolitan School District uses the tool district-wide.  WKOW

  • Dane County is asking residents to give input on the proposed regulation for frozen lakes known as Chapter 71 to enhance safety. A public meeting is scheduled for June 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lussier Family Heritage Center in Madison—written comments will be accepted online until July 15.  WKOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over 500 nurses at UnityPoint Health-Meriter Hospital in Madison began a five-day strike on Tuesday after more than 20 bargaining sessions failed to secure a new contract with better pay and safer working conditions. The hospital brought in outside nurses from a staffing agency and received support from local elected officials — including Bernie Sanders.  The Capital Times
