COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Italian Workmen’s Club will host Festa Italia at McKee Farms Park on Chapel Valley Road in Fitchburg from May 31 to June 1. The family-friendly event will feature spaghetti, meatballs, meatball sandwiches, pizza, and pasta — admission is $7 while kids 12 and under enter free.  WMTV

CRIME NEWS

  • On Memorial Day at a Kennedy Heights apartment complex, an unknown gunman fired his weapon after grabbing a woman grilling for her children—authorities charged the 36-year-old suspect with negligent weapon handling and operating a firearm while intoxicated.  FOX 47
  • A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition after he accidentally shot himself in the head at Harmony Apartments on Milky Way around 9:55 a.m. Monday, police said an unsecured handgun left by his caregiver allowed the child to access it (two other children were not hurt) and led to an arrest.  WKOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Supreme Court announced that it will suspend Dane County Judge Ellen Berz for a week without pay starting June 26 after releasing an 11-page decision that detailed two ethical breaches from 2019 and 2021 (the decision was released Tuesday).  WKOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nurses at UnityPoint-Health Meriter went on strike Tuesday morning after contract talks stalled, with nearly 1,000 picketing outside the hospital at 202 South Park Street in the Greenbush neighborhood and planning a five-day protest. The hospital remained open and brought in travel nurses—SEIU Wisconsin and hospital officials said they will meet on Thursday or earlier to work on safety, staffing, and wages.  FOX 47
  • Almost 1,000 bedside nurses began a planned 10-day strike Tuesday morning at Meriter Hospital, and visiting nurses were onboarded over the holiday weekend to keep care going. The nurses, represented by SEIU Wisconsin, will picket from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day until May 31—hospital officials will meet with them again tomorrow to discuss safety, pay, and staffing.  WKOW
  • Hundreds of nurses went on strike beginning Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. on Brooks Street outside UnityPoint Health Meriter to demand better staffing, patient safety and improved security — they held a 7:30 a.m. press conference to outline their concerns. The strike will continue until 6:59 a.m. on June 1.  WMTV
