COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Madison Veterans Council held its annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday at Forest Hills Cemetery with a volunteer band from VFW 1318 playing patriotic songs such as Military Service Medley and America the Beautiful. Officials honored fallen service members with speeches, color presentations and a rifle salute—reflecting the community's respect for those who served.  WMTV
  • Trust for Public Land released a ParkScore on May 21 that ranked Milwaukee’s and Madison’s park systems as 18th and 19th among the nation’s 100 most populous cities—Milwaukee climbed three spots from last year due to better park access while Madison dropped one place as other cities improved. Both cities showed strong access with nearly all residents living within a 10-minute walk of a park, though they still face challenges with equitable park distribution.  Wisconsin Public Radio

CRIME NEWS

  • A 6-year-old child was injured in a shooting Monday at an apartment on Milky Way in Madison—police arrived at 9:55 a.m. and took the child to a hospital while detectives began investigating what is believed to be an isolated incident.  WKOW

  • Madison’s Royal Thai Pavilion was honored with the 2025 Historic Preservation Award for a restoration project costing $1.6 million—repairs fixed weather-damaged roof tiles and decorative finishes while preserving its cultural heritage.  WMTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources named milkweed its Plant Species of the Year because the wildflower is key for monarch butterflies that depend on it for egg-laying and feeding. Experts stressed that planting the right milkweed species for local soil and sun exposure—whether in wetter or drier areas—can help boost the butterfly habitat.  Wisconsin Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Tony Evers warned lawmakers that if they do not approve 24 permanent positions to replace nearly 30 expiring contract workers at DSPS, wait times for professional licenses will grow longer. The agency—which handles over 200 types of credentials from plumbing to nursing—said the change is needed to help people get into work faster.  Wisconsin Public Radio
