COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This week, Diane Virnig from McFarland found frayed flags and missing markers at Deerfield Lutheran Cemetery just ahead of Memorial Day and bought a flag herself to honor the veterans—now the Veterans of Foreign Wars will replace all flags on Saturday.  WMTV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Visitors on Lake Monona this Memorial Day weekend are asked to report any clues as search teams continue efforts after a small catamaran capsized at 8 p.m. last Friday—two people were rescued, one drifted to shore, and one remains missing.  WMTV
  • Dane County Sheriff's Office is asking for help in the search for a missing boater on Lake Monona after a sailboat capsized last week, with crews resuming work on Thursday after a pause on Tuesday due to bad weather — the Olin Park boat launch remains closed.  WISC-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Madison Police Department is searching for 53-year-old Vince Hildestad—who has Parkinson’s disease and was last seen around 1 a.m. Thursday after leaving UnityPoint Health-Meriter—with no cell phone or vehicle, and anyone with information is urged to call 911.  WMTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UW-Madison officials announced an $81 million renovation of Science Hall, built in 1887, that will include interior upgrades and a rear atrium—improving safety, accessibility, and pedestrian access. Bids will be requested in September 2026, construction will begin in February 2027, and the project is expected to be completed in February 2029.  Isthmus
  • UW-Madison’s School of Computer, Data and Information Sciences is moving to the new Morgridge Hall on University Avenue and North Orchard Street as construction wraps up this summer with classes set to begin this fall. Director Remzi Arpaci-Dusseau said the facility will unite computer science, statistics and the information school under one roof — spurring growth in artificial intelligence research.  The Capital Times

  • Private First Class Dennis Stoppleworth, a Middleton native who served in Vietnam and received Bronze Stars for heroism, was inducted into the Madison VA Hall of Heroes yesterday — he was killed in a helicopter accident soon after his 21st birthday.  WMTV
  • Sen. Bernie Sanders urged UnityPoint Health-Meriter to make a deal with nearly 1,000 nurses, who are set to strike on Tuesday over issues of fair pay, safe staffing & improved safety measures. Union members say the hospital’s latest contract offer did not meet their concerns while hospital leaders remain open to negotiating before the May 29 meeting & continue to ensure community health needs are met.  WISC-TV
