- ➤ Officials from the Dane County Sheriff's Office suspended the search for a missing boater on Lake Monona due to bad weather — crews expect to resume recovery efforts later this week. WISC-TV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Dane County deputies who responded on Feb 23 to a medical emergency at the county jail have been cleared of criminal charges after the county attorney’s investigation found that the 38-year-old inmate’s death—ruled an accident by the medical examiner due to mixed drug intoxication—was not caused by deputy misconduct. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Madison Metropolitan School District and Metro Transit will offer free summer bus rides to middle and high school students and recent graduates from June 12 through Sept. 1 using virtual passes via the Fast Fare mobile app. Students with an existing pass can keep using it while those needing a new one can sign up by emailing [email protected]—further details are available online. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Hundreds of nurses at UnityPoint Health-Meriter will strike next week after contract talks failed — the hospital said outside nurses and non-union staff will cover patient care — and the strike will last until June 1. Wisconsin State Journal
- ➤ UnityPoint Health-Meriter nurses will strike on May 27 because talks did not lead the hospital to agree to better pay, more staff, and safer conditions. The hospital said it is disappointed with the strike — warning that a work stoppage may add stress to staff and the community. WKOW
- ➤ The head of the state office of rural health warned that a federal budget proposal cutting Medicaid and rural hospital grants may force staff layoffs and facility closures in already struggling hospitals—most hospitals depend heavily on federal dollars. He said that if planned grants from May through September are not renewed, his office will have to shut down programs. Wisconsin Public Radio
