- ➤ Open Doors for Refugees will host its annual Community Potluck Picnic at Olin Park on June 22 at 12:30 p.m. (free event) to let refugee families and volunteers meet. - ➤ The search on Lake Monona continues for a missing kayaker whose vessel capsized during a weekend boating trip—four people went out on a catamaran towing a kayak, with one reaching shore and two rescued—and crews using boats, drones and sonar have not yet located the man without a life jacket. WKOW
- ➤ The search for a boater whose sailboat capsized on Lake Monona last Friday shifted from rescue to recovery as crews use sensitive sonar—called tow-fish—to help locate him, a Dane County Sheriff's Office sergeant said. Recovery teams using underwater drones are working today in rough conditions to check the area where the group separated. WISC-TV

- ➤ A 35-year-old Middleton man was arrested on Sunday when officers pulled his car at 1:30 a.m. on University Avenue for a defective brake light and suspicious driving, and he admitted drinking plus he had three past OWI convictions and a suspended license that could lead to a felony charge if convicted. - ➤ Dane County Executive Melissa Agard joined public safety and government leaders on Monday for a groundbreaking ceremony for a new public safety communications facility at the East District Campus. The building will serve as the new home for Dane County 911 operations and is expected to be completed in 2026 — Agard said the upgrade will improve dispatcher technology and workspace. WKOW

- ➤ UW-Madison hosted the 2025 Advances in Social Genomics Conference last week, where researchers discussed how genes + environment combine to shape health and behavior. Faculty explained that the field started with new gene technology and now raises questions about the privacy and regulation of genetic data. Wisconsin Public Radio
- ➤ UW-Madison researchers reported that 770 adults with severe back pain reduced their opioid use after eight weeks of mindfulness training or cognitive therapy (the trial also noted improved pain scores and daily function) in a study conducted in Madison, Boston and Salt Lake City. - ➤ The City Assessor released a 2025 property tax base report showing all properties are valued at 100% of market value as of January 1—locally assessed real estate increased 9.1% overall, with commercial and residential assessments rising 10.9% and 8% respectively while new construction added over $1 billion to the base. City of Madison
- ➤ Capitol Lakes in Downtown Madison is proposing to replace the three-story, 44-unit assisted living building at 345 W. Main St. with a new four-story, 49-unit independent senior apartment building while converting an unused nursing home floor into 30 assisted living units. The Plan Commission approved the apartments this week and construction on the nursing home floor will begin in July with demolition to follow and the new building expected around mid-2027.
