- ➤ Madison College + Wisconsin Aviation are partnering with the FAA to host a flight safety seminar that will stress the need for improved pilot training as aviation challenges grow. WKOW

- ➤ Yesterday, Madison celebrated reaching 100,000 street trees by planting a New Horizon elm (a hybrid designed to resist Dutch elm disease) downtown, with officials (including Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and Ald. Mike Verveer) joining forestry staff in the celebration. City of Madison
- ➤ Residents in Madison have seen swarms of midges forming smoke-like clouds above Wilson Street and nearby areas this week—experts say these insects are harmless and only live for about two weeks. University expert PJ Liesch advises residents to reduce outdoor lights and close window blinds if bugs crowd areas around their homes. WISC-TV

- ➤ The Madison VFW Post 1318 will host a Veterans Benefits and Information Fair on Tuesday, May 20 at 12:00 p.m. at 2740 Ski Lane in Madison. Representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Humana + other organizations will help veterans learn how to access earned benefits. WKOW
- ➤ Madison has named Chad Ruppel as the community development authority’s new housing director + he will oversee low-income and senior housing efforts to meet growing needs in the city. Wisconsin State Journal
- ➤ The DOT has scheduled a public meeting to review plans for resurfacing 3.4 miles of Highway 12 between Terrace Avenue and Gammon Road — officials will also discuss other beltline improvements. Additional details on timing and scope of the project are expected to be shared at the meeting. Wisconsin State Journal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Madison resident David Peterson is sending 900 pounds of medical supplies from his garage to Kyiv via the Wisconsin Medical Project—packed in 40 boxes with items like gauze and surgical mesh. The shipment will be picked up on Monday and is expected to reach Ukraine in about five weeks. WISC-TV
- ➤ Data from the CDC shows that overdose deaths in Wisconsin declined by over 600 cases—a 36% drop from 2023 to 2024—making it the third largest decline in the nation. Public Health Madison-Dane County officials said efforts in harm reduction and outreach, including increased naloxone availability and vending machines, helped Dane County record an 18% decrease in overdose deaths between 2021 and 2023.
