Good morning, Madison. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 13th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leaders at the East Side community center, which has been housed in a church building used since 1954, plan to tear it down and build a modern multi-use space with an open performance area and housing to fill a missing middle need—affordable housing will help fund the project. The church will retain its land while a capital campaign is underway.  WMTV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Dane County prosecutors charged Jeffrey Rupnow with felony counts after the Dec. 16 mass shooting at Abundant Life Christian School that killed a teacher and a student and injured five others — the criminal complaint outlines his daughter’s gun practice, therapy changes, and a request to use a gun the day before the attack.  The Capital Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, child care providers in Waunakee held a Day Without Child Care event to protest the removal of state funding from the Child Care Counts program. HEALTH NEWS

  • Almost 1,000 union nurses at UnityPoint Health-Meriter Hospital in Madison may strike from May 27 until June 1 if their demands for safe staffing, better safety measures and higher pay for senior staff are not met.
