COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Union launched a limited edition mini Terrace chair that features the word open to help fund UW–Madison’s The Open Seat Food Pantry. Students can buy the chair for $16.99 plus tax at Badger Market in Memorial Union, Union South or online, and only 864 chairs are available.  WISC-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • It has been a month since a fishing boat capsized near Kilbourn Dam, leaving 75-year-old Louis Di Filippo dead and 20-year-old Frank Di Filippo missing as divers and volunteers search in Wisconsin Dells while the family asks for extra cadaver dogs — drones and sonar equipment to help.  WMTV
  • Two firefighters were injured responding to a fire at a Fitchburg home on Thursday morning—injuries are not believed to be life-threatening while all residents safely evacuated.  WISC-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Madison Public Library began its WE READ summer reading program on May 1 by offering families a new reading map drawn by local artist Emily Balsley to help set creative summer goals—this design appears on tote bags and sticker sheets. The program includes contests, prizes and activities for kids and teens at all nine library locations and will celebrate the library’s 150th Anniversary with parties on May 10, 17 and 31.  City of Madison

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Tony Evers and state lawmakers have proposed creating a state film office and restoring tax credits to attract film and TV crews in an effort to boost local economic growth — the measures aim to keep creative talent in Wisconsin and encourage production spending in local communities.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • Madison Police Captain Diana Nachtigal was named one of Wisconsin’s most influential Native American Leaders for 2025 by Madison 365. She leads community outreach efforts at MPD with groups such as Amigos en Azul & Black Officer Coalition, and promotes MPD Pride & youth summer camps.  City of Madison

SPORTS NEWS

  • The USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships are set to roll through Madison this weekend with a team time trial happening today in Hubbleton, a road race planned in Waterloo tomorrow, and a criterium scheduled for Sunday in the Tenney-Lapham neighborhood. Drivers should plan for road closures — the 800 and 900 blocks of East Mifflin Street will close from 8 p.m. on May 3, and portions of several streets will close at 5 a.m. on Sunday, with roads reopening by 6 p.m.  WISC-TV
