EDUCATION NEWS

  • Edgewood High School in Madison will go phone-free next school year—students must leave their phones in a locked pouch that only opens at a special station as principal Jerry Zander says the change will lessen distractions and support mental health. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wisconsin Medicaid director Bill Hanna warned that planned federal cuts may force the state to spend billions more on health care and make it harder for people to get coverage. A DHS report shows a formula change could cost between $6.4 billion and $16.8 billion over the next 10 years — most affecting the elderly, disabled and low-income residents.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • After their son Andrew died from anaphylactic shock after accidentally eating peanut butter M&M’s, parents Crista and Mark Mueller met with Sen. Patrick Testin who drafted a bill to let law enforcement carry epinephrine — a measure aimed at saving lives in emergencies while officers have raised concerns over funding. The family, convinced that having epinephrine on hand could have changed the outcome, is also planning a memorial benefit for Andrew on June 21.  WKOW
  • Dane County Parks broke ground on a $2.6 million project to improve Mendota County Park, which will be closed as crews begin work next month and finish this fall. The project will replace the shelter, add an accessible playground, walking trail, basketball court and parking improvements — partly funded by more than $1.6 million honoring Karen and Tom Ragatz.  WISC-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dane County Executive Melissa Agard declared May as Mental Health Awareness Month to show that mental health is as important as physical health — aligning with national efforts by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
