COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday afternoon, Chabad of Madison opened its new Jewish community center on Monroe Street—featuring a kosher kitchen, classrooms, event space, a Jewish library, and a children’s play area—while the group plans to expand its Hebrew school and programs from its former Regent Street home.  FOX 47

CRIME NEWS

  • Madison Police Department arrested two people for a strong-armed robbery on April 20th on the 2700 block of E. Washington Avenue. One suspect faces charges — resisting, causing soft tissue injury, bail jumping, robbery with use of force, theft and disorderly conduct — while the other is charged with robbery with use of force, theft, disorderly conduct and felony bail jumping.  WMTV
  • Sierra Schoonover, 31, was booked into Dane County Jail on a charge of first-degree intentional homicide after deputies responded on April 14 to a call at a home on Smokey Mountain Trail in Blue Mounds where her 54-year-old mother died+records show she crashed her car, fled the scene, was treated for injuries at a hospital, and was booked just before 9 p.m. Monday.  WKOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Wisconsin–Madison restored all 27 international students and alumni to active status after their visa records were terminated earlier this week. Officials said the affected individuals were notified and may now continue their studies or training—there was no explanation for the terminations.  WMTV
  • UW-Madison leadership announced Monday that the visas of 27 students & alumni terminated earlier this month were restored as of Saturday night after legal challenges secured the reversal. The restoration allows these individuals to continue their studies and work on campus while officials warned that not all visa terminations may be undone.  Wisconsin Public Radio

  • On Monday, Dane County’s Opioid Settlement Subcommittee held a public hearing to ask residents how to use funds from national opioid settlements approved in 2022 and 2023. Several speakers stressed the need for sober living, re-entry support and prevention programs — Rick Rose said the dollars came from a lawsuit for those affected by the opioid crisis.  WKOW
