  • The city has spent months preparing for today's Mifflin Street Block Party with building inspectors checking 58 properties and issuing 26 violation notices while police, fire, and code enforcement officers increased their patrols with over 150 officers and additional ambulances—ensuring strict safety protocols ahead of the event.  City of Madison
  • One Walk, Big Strides for Autism returns this weekend at McKee Farms Park in Fitchburg as a one-mile walk hosted by the Autism Society of South Central Wisconsin—participants pick up shirts at 10 a.m. and begin walking at 11 a.m. on Sunday.  WISC-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Madison police arrested a wanted man on Wednesday night near the 2900 block of Fitchrona Road after he crashed into a guard rail during a chase, and he now faces charges including battery and strangulation.  WISC-TV
  • Three people were arrested and one person was hurt after a police chase turned into a crash on Thursday at 8:13 p.m. when Monona police intercepted a stolen Nissan Altima near Monona Kwik Trip and arrested the driver for an OWI + multiple felony charges.  WISC-TV
  • Madison authorities issued a warrant for Valerie Czebotar, 45, who went AWOL from the Jail Diversion Program and was last seen on the 1300 block of East Dayton Street Thursday afternoon—anyone with information should call 608 2552345.  WKOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a panel discussion Thursday — organized by PROFS and ASPRO — UW-Madison faculty and staff urged collective action against federal moves to cut research funding and budget support, noting that possible 5 to 10 percent cuts could reduce services for students. The group stressed that the proposed federal funding slashes put broad campus programs at risk.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • A new library and community center called the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park will break ground on May 8 at 12:30 p.m. after more than $4 million in state funding pushed the decades-long project forward, and its indoor—outdoor design will be built by Summer 2026 with opening slated for Fall 2026.  WMTV
