CRIME NEWS

  • A Madison woman charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree child sexual assault allegedly encouraged a 22-year-old man to assault her infant daughter, with text messages showing both wanted the act— the man was arrested last week on child pornography charges and her bond set at $300,000 precedes her court appearance on April 30th.  FOX 47

CULTURE NEWS

  • Latino artists will gather for the 2nd Annual Wisconsin Conference on LatinX Arts and Culture on May 2-3 at Centro Hispano of Dane County to explore music, film, exhibits and writing. LOUD—Latinos organizing for understanding and development—will host the two-day event, and limited tickets remain available.  WMTV
  • The Madison Arts Commission awarded $106,000 to 66 organizations and individuals for arts projects in the 2025-2026 grant cycle. It received 74 applications totaling $227,432 so many proposals were not fully funded and projects in poetry, visual arts, dance and film will bring new creative opportunities to Madison.  City of Madison

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in Madison Metropolitan School District won 12 state championships and earned qualification for 48 national events at career and technical student organization conferences at La Follette, Memorial and West high schools. The district said many West High School students, including 35 national qualifiers, will compete in events this summer in Anaheim, Orlando and Nashville.  WMTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction said in a letter Friday morning that state schools already follow federal law and will not sign a new Title VI request because it could let Washington, D.C. direct local schools—State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly said local leaders should make school decisions themselves.  WMTV
  • The state Supreme Court ruled Friday that Gov. Tony Evers used his partial veto to lock in a 400-year school funding increase for K-12 schools. The decision affirms the unique veto power of Wisconsin governors — the broadest in the nation — while lawmakers and business groups challenge its long-term impact.  WKOW
  • N Franklin Avenue and Lynn Terrace will be closed to non-local traffic starting Monday, April 28 as crews replace old utilities with new asphalt, sidewalks, and updated water and sewer lines. The project will continue until mid-September—restoring the full traffic flow when complete.  City of Madison
