COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Ribbons were cut today at the opening of the Autumn Ridge Path on Madison’s east side, which connects Milwaukee Street with Commercial Avenue and features a bridge over Highway 30. The new multi-use path fills a gap in safe routes for walkers and bikers and was mostly funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law — with the rest provided by the city. WKOW

- ➤ A Beltline crash caused by racing vehicles sent 2 adults and 2 children to the hospital—Madison police said one driver was arrested while the other fled the scene. Wisconsin State Journal

- ➤ Award-winning sports writer Jason Gay — a UW graduate — will give the keynote address at UW-Madison spring commencement, and he spoke at the winter ceremony in 2019. WISC-TV
- ➤ More than two dozen UW-Madison students and recent alumni have had their visas terminated through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System as of Wednesday—official counts now stand at 26 terminations after one cancellation was blocked by a restraining order. WISC-TV

- ➤ Madison City Council chose Ald. Regina Vidaver from the Near West Side as its president after a Tuesday election that brought in seven new members and saw two incumbents lose their seats. The council also approved a change in Metro Transit's fare evasion rules — and awarded a contract to build the new Imagination Center library on the Far East Side to serve 26,000 residents. - ➤ The Madison Police Department will implement a new amnesty policy on April 22 that exempts underage drinking citations when 911 callers request medical help, remain with the victim, and cooperate—MPD officers will receive training on the changes after the policy goes into effect. - ➤ A bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced a bill on April 15 to exempt gun safes and firearm safety devices from sales tax — a move designed to make secure gun storage more affordable — while Governor Tony Evers supports the measure despite an estimated $720,000 loss in state revenue for the 2026 fiscal year. - ➤ Today, a new report from the Wisconsin Office of Children’s Mental Health shows that four in 10 boys have thought about suicide in the past two weeks and that 90 percent of sextortion victims are boys aged 14 to 17 while boys are two to four times more likely to die by suicide than girls. The report also tells the heartbreaking story of Jacob, a 14-year-old whose death has led his family to urge open talks about feelings and plan a Roof Putt Championship on May 16 at Jacob’s Swagg Foundation.
