COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Madison Public Library will host its 150th anniversary parties at nine branches on three Saturdays in May—May 10, May 17, and May 31—to offer trivia games, interactive art cakes, photo booths, and free refreshments for community members. Library officials including Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and Library Director Tana Elias encourage everyone to join the events that celebrate the library's past and inspire its future—attendance is free with no registration needed.  City of Madison
  • News 3 Now's Community Baby Shower has returned to support Babies & Beyond with donations running from April 14–18; families may drop off essentials at the donation center in Babies & Beyond at 1922 South Stoughton Road from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.  WISC-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The JCPenney store at East Towne Mall experienced a partial facade collapse on Friday—an engineer inspected the building over the weekend and deemed it safe before customers returned on Sunday while repairs continue underway.  WKOW

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities in Blue Mounds said a 31-year-old woman was named as a person of interest in the death of a 54-year-old woman after a call at 11:44 a.m. reported a disturbance on 10889 Smokey Mountain Trail—she fled in a vehicle and was later caught after a brief foot pursuit.  WISC-TV
  • Madison police are seeking help to identify a woman seen on restaurant footage from a fight at Cheba Hut on March 28 at 11:10 p.m. on West Gilman Street—she struck an employee with a glass fish-bowl that required hospital treatment and sprayed mace on customers as she left.  WKOW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin DNR warned that high fire danger will persist through Wednesday as dry weather and strong winds sparked 63 wildfires that burned 135 acres over the weekend. DNR staff will remain on standby with fire equipment and National Guard crews are ready for response — officials have also suspended burn permits in 24 counties including parts of Columbia, Sauk, and Dane counties — to help protect local communities.  WMTV
  • The Wisconsin Supreme Court kept its 4-3 liberal majority after Dane County Judge Susan Crawford won the election and now will hear cases that affect state environmental policies. Some cases will challenge the DNR on CAFO permits, a pipeline reroute, public trust rules, and a wolf management plan — issues that could shape state action in the coming months.  Wisconsin Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Madison's longtime city clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl resigned Monday after being on leave during the review of 193 absentee ballots not counted in the November election—city Attorney Michael Haas now serves as acting clerk while a nationwide search for a replacement begins. She was appointed in 2006 and oversaw more than 60 elections during her tenure.  WKOW

  • Madison’s Plan Commission approved converting an Amazon distribution center at 5004 Tradewinds Parkway into a 28,000 square-foot indoor pickleball facility with 10 fenced courts planned to open in late summer or early fall—meeting the growing need for year-round play. Dill Dinkers Pickleball will manage the venue and offer private reservations and open play from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily—catering to local players during colder months.  The Capital Times
